Just changed the oil in the final drive and the gearbox at the weekend. The gearbox came out like brand new. However, the final drive oil came out all black and sludgy, with signs of metal on the magnetic drain plug.

Cant remember what it was like the last time I did it. (early senility?)

Do they all do that?

Happy New Year yourself :D :D

Have you ever changed the final drive oil?? You should have done by now. What was it like (apart from shagged);)

Yup, came out the same colour as it went in 12000 miles previously. Can't understand why, 'cos the following week, the bevel bearings were diagnosed as being shagged. There's a lot of it about (things being shagged, not clean oil).

Ah, yes, wait a minute - the two aren't connected; sorry.

It's still prolly shagged though.

:D

:D

The oil I drained out of mine was the same. Thick and black.
I filled it with the correct amount and touch tested the casting after a long ride to see if it was hot but it seemed OK. I just thought it had been filled with an additive at the factory/dealer.
So far no problems but then again it may be shagged.

Been there replaced that

Mine came out grey with metal shavings from the bevel drive and was FUBAR. Had to replace the bevel drive after the output bearing packed up and shattered everything in the bevel drive. If it makes a whining noise when you are throttling down get it looked at else it will cost you £300(2nd hand) or £500 new from BMW without labour.

Do 200 miles with the new oil and drain it just for sanity, the shavings I am refering to was about 1-2mm and not the fine stuff you normally find on the magnetic plugs which is normal with wear and tear. Black oil still sounds ok but if it is grey then the metal bearing pieces is grinding down your gears. Sorry to make you paranoid now but trust me it is worth the £££ you are going to spend if it goes wrong.

Good luck!

Sorry, I'll just get me coat

could it possibly be the cause of the little slide you had last time you were out ,when mine went it locked the wheel for a nanosecond

Just been thinking about this, Panzer. Black sludgy oil in a final drive could be moisture combining with the normal deposits in a used oil. In an engine, it usually shows as white sludge until the oil gets hot enough to boil off the moisture, but in a final drive, in this weather......unlikely. The resulting emulsion would quickly turn black with any impurities, amongst which would be iron oxide (rust) formed as a result of the moisture. This is normally thought of as reddish, but is actually black in its pure form.

I would be tempted to refill and do a few miles (several hundred?) and drop it out again to see what it looks like before being contaminated with moisture long-term like the current oil.

P.S. Both my gearbox and F/D oil had very fine metallic particles on the plug.

LRR, I think Steady Away has hit the nail on the head. I had a monster opposite lock slide at an unfunny kinda speed, when I was going up the Dales to Alston, between two dry stone walls as well. Fair enough, there was cack on the road, but I have always been sort of unsettled about the whole thing. The whole thing just let go when I was cranked right over, no warning, nothing. That hasnt happened before, no matter how stupid I have been. Something wasnt right, maybe this is it.

The only time I have used the bike since, was last weekend, to try out the new chip and get the running gear hot enough to drain the oil. Again, the roads were covered in cack, which has never bothered me before, but the bike didnt feel right. Infact I chickened out on all the hard acceleration / top speed runs. I blamed it on the road conditions but its never stopped me before.

I was thinking it may be the tyre, which is fairly new but well run in. To the extent that if it felt the same I was going to stick a new one on. I know I am a bit numpty with some things (remember Croft and the wheel spindle). I have a feeling there is something not right (might be me) but its coming apart and unless it is mint, I am sticking some new bearings in the thing.

PS: Sorry about the tank bag jibe, my turn to get me coat :D

have you ever thought of checking the timing to see if its out and causing the engine to give an eratic performance and lock the back end up, mate

Oh, and by the by, you are probably right, its shagged :D

Removed final drive and bearing shagged, need a Bearing puller- so--
Panzer phones Hadrian who's a non smoker-- I need a bearing puller have you got one?
Hadrian-- What size is the bearing?
Panzer-- I don't know, it's about the size of my ashtray:confused: :o :D

i agree with hadrian the timing of the valvy things could be as much as 10 degrees out without causing any loss in performance apart from rear bearing failure.I DONT SUPPOSE THERE IS ANY CHANCE OF KEEPING THIS QUIET IS THERE LADS!!!!!!
