Since I got back from Europe I've noticed an oil leak from the swinging arm end of the final drive.
If its just that seal is it easy to replace by dropping the final drive down or will i have to get it to mikeyboy drive was rebuilt about 20.000 miles ago and had a new disc flange about 10.000 miles ago.
I may as well do and oil change as well whilst doing it.
I'll drop it down this afternoon to have a look.
An advice in advance would be welcome as I've never dropped it down before.
Btw 67.000 miles on the bike now.

Dropped the final drive and drained the oil.
As some of it went on the floor I couldn't get a good idea of how much was in there but it was reasonably clean after 7.000 miles since the last change. A couple of small bits of metal on the speed sensor but not much.
There did seem to be a fair bit of oil in the bottom of the swinging arm so I suspect Bendy may be right about the gearbox output shaft seal.
I also topped up the gearbox with about 60 ml of oil which leads me to the same conclusion.
I shall be giving mikeyboy a ring I think as I'm not too confident about taking half of the back end off the bike myself to sort it.

I did my gearbox seal with the swing arm taken off. But it might be possible with the arm in place.

You need to drill the seal and use one or two self tapper screws to pull the old seal out. Grease the new seal and tap into place. You could PVC tape over the shaft splines to protect the seal. Wind the tape from gearbox end.

You get the chance to regrease and/or replace the swing arm bearings.

Houdini

How is it possible to change the output seal and leave things in place Bendy? Have you done it? It took me 90 mins.
Anyone know if Silicone Grease can be used on the output seal.

I did say - it might be possible with the arm in place.

... and no I've not tried because my bike was in bits having the subframes powder coated. Logically if it can't be done with arm in place the next job is (funnily enough) to take the arm off. Perfect chance to change the no doubt worn swing arm bearings.

Its not possible with the swing arm in place. Im pissed off after cleaning and regreaseing my rear brake near KIEV im back in Lvov with a rear end full of oil. No aggression intentttende

Dropping it off at mikeyboy on saturday to be sorted out.

No worries its big P**S off when something like a final drive that should be fit and forget can't cope with normal usage.

My Yammie 900 now has at least 100K on the clock (new owner) and the final drive has simply had oil changes. It looks like the same unit used on Japanese bikes since the original CX500 GL1000 etc.
