What should I put in the final drive of my 1200 GSA, and how do I know when I've put in sufficient? My Haynes manual doesn't mention the subject.

yep all depends what the local market is.... for instance in switzerland you can not buy saf-xo, its not even imported into the country by castrol or available from the dealers under their own branding.

Castrol and bmw switzerland say people should use saf-xj instead.

Use the search facility more often my friend, there are numerous threads about this issue in the 1200 section.

Castrol SAF-XO (75/90) or SAF-XJ (75/140)

Personally I have used the SAF-XJ.
Make sure your use Moly Assembly Compound on your shaft/pinnion splines.

Timpo.
