Hi All,
just cleaning and servicing my final drive and lubing the driveshaft before the summer touring season and was wondering whether the bolt that holds the final drive to the swingarm needs any Loctite on reassembly. My Haynes manual doesn't mention it and says the re-tightening torque should be 100Nm, but it was a real tight bastard to remove and there looked like there was some residue evident on the threads. What are the thoughts of the collective?

It'll be a real tight bastard to tighten again!
100Nm is a lot and I had to buy a bigger torque wrench to do it.
Don't remember using any Loctite and seems to be fine. Just remembered, I did use some!
I'm sure there be other opinions, though.

Thanks for the replies.
Now all I've got to do is find the bearing retainer circle that flew off the end of my pliers into the garage somewhere - always disconcerting when you don't hear it land.

Clean the old loctite out with acetone (nail varnish remover in a pinch) before reassembling - you'll never torque it accurately without clean threads.

Why do you need to remove that bolt, surely you've access to everything you need without undoing that one??

What do you use to heat it up?

(just preparing for if i need to remove my drive at some stage )

There is a felt sealing washer beneath the trunnion pin arrowed in your second picture. They are easily damaged.

I've lost count of how many of these bolts snap or the socket section of the trunnion breaks off.

In fact i had one break off just last week, a very odd breakage, it's still in the garage bin i'll take a picture and post it up later.

In fact i now keep a spare of each on the shelf.
