I thought i had play in the rear wheel bearing of my 1100GS, I bought the bearings and the seals only to find when I took the wheel off the play is in the swing arm! :blast

I have checked the 2 bearings either side of the universal joint, one is very ruff so I will replace them both. I think this is the problem unless anyone can tell me otherwise.

My question is, has anyone any experiance with taking these apart and can tell me if the play I have in the universal joint is normal? There is movement forwards and backwards on the shaft, there also play from side to side.:nenau

Any advise will be greatly recieved.....:beerjug:

Swingarm pivot brgs/ final drive pivot brgs..... if it where me I would have just suspected the pivot brgs in the final drive end from what you say, there is a stack of postings on here if you do a search regarding final drive brg replacement and pivot brg replacement and ajustment. and how to diagnose the fault.

Play in the uni joint, thats a difficult one the say, what you call play could be just clearance which becomes more apparent when you drain of lube and partialy dismantle....

Grease up and Fit your new pivot brgs, bolt it back up and I think you will have solved it, fingers crossed.

Good luck.

You do know that the small drive shaft-U/J comes off the input splines, don't you ? That maybe the movement you have.

Looks like you've done lots of unnecesary dismantling. Why didn't you try adjusting the paralever bearings before tearing everything apart.

Drain what lube ?? The U/J joint doesn't sit in any lube, there is nothing to drain or dismantle, it pushes on and pulls off.

that be true... but looking at the piccie, the final drive has been drained and opened up, I'am assuming (silly old me) that maybe he knows the u/j push's off and on...... but maybe your correct... maybe ?? I thought he might have been pushing and pulling from the crown gear end, you read it different to me, but I'am sure he 'll be along soon to tell us all whats what. :thumb

Go back and look at the piccie - the final drive case locked in a vice - and the short drive shaft is still attached !! .

So i'm assuming ( like you:D) that maybe he doesn't know.. But i'm also assuming ( silly old me) that you didn't see it's still attched , because it's partially hidden in the vice picture.

I do know the the short shaft comes off, I can see it moving on the shaft. I don't know how to remove it, it moves about 5mm up and down the splined shaft then won't come any further. I'm not the sort of person who takes a hammer and chiesel to something without doing some research.

I stripped it all down to check all the bearings. I will replace the large ball race as I have seen one of your previous posts of this bearing and the race the bearings sit in is starting to break up, seen as I have the bearing I might as well replace it while its on the bench.

Just lever it off with one/two stout screw drivers, it has an expandable circlip which holds it on to the splines, it just pops off honest.:thumb

Simon

Handy knowing that the pivot joint comes off, made the job a lot essier!:thumb

The sat looking very sad all weekend while the sun was out, all the time knowing I was in the pub watching the rugby!:beerjug:

Still she's all back together now and running like a dream. All parts cleaned, bearings replaced, seals replaced and new oil in the final drive...

Thanks for all the info you guys gave, Its comforting to think people will take time out to help, Cheers.:clap
