I've "finally" had to replace the crown-wheel bearing. Should I replace the taper roller bearing while I'm in there? ('02 GS 108k miles)

I already have a spare taper roller bearing so I'm inclined to use it. But I've heard that shimming will be required if I replace it. Is that really the case?
The old bearing does have a bit more play than the new one but the race doesn't appear worn.
Plus I'm not convinced my 2-leg bearing puller will get the race out easily. It's not giving me enough lip!

Should I leave well enough alone and be satisfied with a new crown-wheel bearing?
Thanks.

i changed the big bearing a few weeks ago
small tapered bearing felt fine, loose, (the rollers in the cage) but all felt fine, not flat spots, not overheating.
Also, here and on ADV I havent heard of anybody changing this taper bearing, only the big one

when i had the rockster i changed mine when i did the main bearing,be careful the thrust washer only goes one way round check it its got a shamfer on it,also getting the race out is a pain without the correct race puller,i did the oven/freezer thing all went to plan

Thanks for replies, fellas
I didn't think of over-heating so gave it another careful inspection. I opted for the easy route and left the old TR bearing in place.
FD is back together now but the job has grown: I should check the clutch hose and slave cyl. Maybe clean the gear position switch. There were some gear indicator errors during a deluge last week.

My tool kit will be lighter now. I've been carrying that crown wheel bearing on trips for the past 20k miles and more. I wonder how long it will be before I buy another spare.

BTW Final drive cover bolts. Torque setting: 35Nm
(I couldn't find this data in the Haynes manual. Maybe it will be useful to someone else.)
