Final drive repair

My FD outer seal is leaking 'actually dripping this time' I read on here a bit back about a guy who can repair the FD's. Can anyone put up a link to his (or their) thread/s for me please.

I'll call BMW on Monday to ask if they can do the job, but don't want to pay their prices if I can help it.

I'm fairly sure it's just the outer seal that's given up as there's no unusual or excessive play there at the moment.

if its just the outer seal(offside of bike thin round black seal) its an easy repair even from bm.should take them under half an hour.

As above, if it's the outer you can do it easily yourself. If it is in need of a rebuild then theres a few on here that have done one. Was it this one?

Hi fellow Tossers ) my FD developed a low rumble, only noticeable when cleaning the wheel, nothing when riding. I whipped it off and sent it up to Bryan (Post Office Special Delivery) on Monday - he returned it on Friday afternoon !! He replaced the large and small bearing on the crown wheel, small pinion bearings all OK. What a state the large bearing was in ! the cage had started to break-up, and the amount of heavy crud found under the seals was unbelievable _ hope photos come out

Surely it would not add much more to the cost to replace the lot in one go, as opposed to risk having to do the pinion bearings in a few months

How much did this rebuild cost?

Well Pleased

The Beast has just over 45K miles on her; I do around 16k per year.
The work cost £210, I did supply a couple of seals and a circlip.

Why did I not have the lot replaced ? Because it was not showing any signs of distress - there was an issue - issue fixed - move on until the next time there is something to fix ! The unit is easy to take off and the crown wheel bearings are easy (ish) to replace. Not the same for the pinion bearings - bit of a swine I understand. Bryan also put in a drain plug - yipee !! Changing FD oil is now a cinch, drain oil, refit plug, squirt in 185 ml of castrols finest through rear facing hole - job done. I will now change the oil every 4 thou miles, and monitor for metallic debris etc. As you do on Power Stations - Condition Monitoring it is called !!

Dave, What oil are you using? I only need to replace the outer seal, which bsogri tells me is an easy job. Seal's on it's way but they won't post the oil.

FD OIL

Hi Val, I use, read of this in a few places, Castrol SAF XO , although I think they have changed the name now. It is a fully synth SAE 75W-90, and I get mine from Opies Oils, they post it out pronto; not cheap but she's worth it !! I am sure different folks will use a variation on this one - good luck dp

I got a bottle from Opie, the name has changed but the stuff inside is the same, about £20 delivered I think and it will do 4 changes - gonna do mine with each rear tyre change.

Steptoe did it for me last time, using the new (lower) amount, so now you mention it that would equate to 5 fills.

At £4 a pop compared to the £100 of tyre and £600 of fuel you will burn in the same period it seems like a no brainer to me.

It is also one of those jobs I just do not trust the dealers not to skip come service time, especialy if you have an earlier bike that takes a bit longer. This way I know it has been done regularly - maybe that is why some FD's last 60k, whilst many are knackered in half that mileage

I see that most people in here had the F/D bearing rebuild on your bike.

Do you have any idea from where I can get the full assy (bearing / seals etc) for my bike (R1200GS 09)/ and also if you have a clue about part numbers or market alternatives.

Also what are the usual symptoms of a damaged F/D bearing.

Hi Skywalker - I did consider not posting anything as I certainly didn`t want any escalation. Yes, Rasher is a little opinionated (if thats spelt correctly?) but, if you wouldn`t mind me saying, I don`t think it`s as harsh as `spouting crap`. I don`t know rasher and I have followed some of his `focused opinions` but I wouldn`t be so hard on him mate we are all here for the benefit of all and we love our bikes (I think even Rasher does)!

Anyway, onto more positive things what forums should be for - sadly some dealers (not necessarily BMW!) are a little less professional than what they should be and its good to see fellow tossers, like you and Rasher, doing the jobs yourselves. I now refill my 06 GS FD myself. I do not doubt that my dealer wouldn`t do it though I do have evidence (yes, evidence) of not so professional work carried out by my dealer (which was sorted as soon as I complained) I certainly don`t hold it against them. For me, doing my own FD oil change brings me a little peace of mind and I recommended it to all regardless as to how great the dealer is (and there are a lot of them who are!). On the flip side, though I am possibly not as enthusiastic about it as rasher, I think we can all be forgiven for having a jaded view of the motor trade based on some of the sharks out there!

Just had mt bike serviced 07 GS,with all new fluids etc when i paid the bill the dealer says you have a slight rumble on the fd drive probably the bearing and should be changed within 1500 miles or so. bl**dy hell, the bike has only done 5500 miles ,thats why I bought it a couple of months ago from a non bmw dealer, do I complane to BMW UK ?
