Ayup GS'ers. I have an '02 1150 that has just had it's rear wheel big bearing replaced after it went bang in Italy.

Got me thinking about preventative maintenance of the shaft/drivebox assembly.

The service schedule mentions nothing but changing the oil, but I've always periodically stripped Guzzi shaft drives and cleaned/lubed splines with moly grease. I also bung a bit of 80/90 into the rubber UJ boot to keep things moist and generally slippy (stops the UJ seals drying out and cracking).

Is there any point doing anything more than just changing the oil on a BM setup?

Also - I have a tiny amount of wheel play even with the new bearing, what's going on there?

Reading ADVrider, the Yanks seem obsessive about spline lubing.
Much more so than over here.
When i had my transmission in bits,i did slop a load of greasy Moly jollop on the splines, taking the view that it couldn't hurt and it was in bits anyway.
As for your play, did you change or adjust the paralever bearings?.

shaft lube.

there is no oil in oilhead shafts, just moly the splines once a year if you feel the need, cant see how putting oil in the rubber boot will do any thing bu make a mess, how do you get it in.

I put oil in the guzzi UJ boot not on the blimmer. I didn't adjust the paralever bearings no, could be them that has a bit of slop I guess. Will go read my manual and have a poke about, thanks chaps.

You may need to use a hot air gun to soften the Locktite on the locknut and adjusting pivot.

The correct torque is 7nm but of course that's with clean threads. Some people just tighten gradually until there's no play.
