08 GS 1200 5ooo miles,Does anybody know what is deemed to be an acceptable amount of play/backlash in the final drive,This is doing my head in especially in low speed town and roundabout riding etc.Oh and bye the way the Dealer says its normal and "They all do that mate".:mad:not a happy bunny right now.
 
Mine has a few degrees of play as far as I can remember. This translates to quite a few cm of movement of the back wheel with the engine off in gear. Never noticed an effect while riding though. You've not said how much yours moves, but I'll have to have a better look to put a figure on it.

have it checked out proper
i am on my 4th final drive and the bike has not even got 40 k on the clock:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'am on my 3rd Final Drive in less than 6k.............beat that:nenau

Now the Clutch Slave Cylinders gone and it needs a new Master Cylinder as well not happy, have approached BMW re new replacement bike.........:eek

Well I drove a Guzzi with the new heralded CARC rear drive.

Through town it was bang, bang, bang as the drive took up the slack - not impressed - though I believe there are different bushes available to help cure it.

i) the GS will show up any 'hamfisted technique'!
You need to be smoov and gentle with the controls! This doesnt mean you have to ride like you are trying to get 330mpg from it, it means transitions in throttle and clutch use have to be smooth....

ii) your dealer's right, all the R12 series have transmission lash if you're not smooth.
