Got a 2015 GS. No point really in saying what a crackin machine, but, always thought it was very undergeared for what was supposed to be, a long distance tourer. Great but hugely undergeared has been a universal comment from mates with other marques who have ridden it. Mates just got an RS which seems to go perfectly well and looking at the gearing its final drive has higher ratio which gives more relaxed cruising. The question is would an RS final drive fit the GS shaft. Cant see why not. Whats the collective knowledge think?

Of course the RS or even taller RT final drive will fit and give you lower rpm at given speed.
But at the cost of acceleration and roll-on...if this is what you want do it.

How will you ride it off road then ?

130mph out of a gsa is good enough, for all other times S1000rr.

im interested in this too - it could do with a slightly higher gear in top for touring - i hadn't even considered that the RT / RS would be different

is it just in the last part of the final drive - or are the gearbox internals different too?

I’d go onto the OEM parts website and compare part numbers of the casings and couplings, obviously the gears will be different.

The gear ratios are the same and as far as i can tell the only difference is in the final drive. Given that RS is the same power output but maybe a bit lighter doesnt seem to lack performance, bound to lose a bit of acceleration but as an on road only tourer seems like a good option. I remember that the 1150 had two gearbox options while 1150 adventure had lower ratios again for the off roaders.

I think you have a couple of options, buy the RT final drive gears and swap them out, this will be expensive and a pain in the arse to set up back lash etc.

Or buy a second hand final drive assembly, just swap it over and then if it’s no good swap it back and sell it.

The GS/GSA when loaded with panniers has all the aerodynamics of a brick. Above 80mph the MPG goes to crap - I don’t see the RT final drive helping with that. Maybe in the 50 - 70 range you would get some better MPG and would be a bit quieter but that’s just where I would want that easy roll on grunt from the original drive.
I may be wrong but I think that RT final drive swap was more common on the 1100/1150 GSAs as their gearing was so low and only 5 gears
Be an interesting test though, an expensive test - so try it and let us know :)

I can cruise 100 + two up full loaded with no issues and steady as a rock , can hold 120 if need be on main roads , still steady . R1200gs 2016.
To be honest any faster than 120 is not cruising , unless your on the auto ban

Er, don't forget the wheel offset might not work. I know the offset between the GS and R is different. A Puig GS hugger and a GS rear shovel can be attached to an R final drive but they don't sit centrally over the tyre. Fred_jb is your man.

My Gearing on my LC has altered (not by choice or my maths;)) the speedo is now reading 1-2 mph fast instead of the 4-5mph, and it feels sooo much better, i put a 190 50 17 rear on to go with the new 6" wide rim so the aspect ratio must alter the gearing slightly it feels like its been to hilltop again for another boost:rolleyes:

You should have put a 190/55 on it.Quicker steering and even taller gearing/less rpm at given speed due to taller diameter of the tire...:thumb

i did and it was too quick..great fun though if you stuck to the legal speed limit, anything over it was a bit twitchy
