have just changed my fd oil thanks to you blocks, heard about this webb site and read all about the trouble with the fd so drained it and it was black but not to bad,i put 75w140 fully syn oil in it but is that to heavy,i think it will be ok out here(austaralia)i have done 35k km and have had no problems so far and just love the bike, had 1100gs before this, hope i have as good a run as it.
The standard specification oil is Castrol SAF-XO which is 75W90 Grade and is an extreme pressure lubricant designed primarily for high load hypoid gears such as those in commercial truck axles.
If yours is 75W140 Grade it exceeds the specification of the standard viscosity range required and should therefore be OK, assuming any lubricity modifiers and anti-wear/anti-shear additives are also present in the brand of oil used.
EDIT: Just read the above link fully and it is interesting that BMW recommend changing rear axle oils every two years. If cars need changing every two years, surely doing an oil change on your bike every two years would be a very good idea too.
Just picked up my 1200 GS, and clarified with the dealer that the rear drive oil WOULD be changed at 600 miles. He assured me that although BMW have not given them any more time within the first service to do this, it IS TO BE DONE on all 2007 bikes. Worth checking with your dealer before you buy!
Cheers
