Finally Decision made re R1200GS or XT1200Z Super Ten

Similar to me that Rasher, the BMW Dealer would not offer me anything for my Fully Loaded GSA he said he had too many, it only had six months warranty left and i was not going to extend warranty because I have never had to do that before and wasn't gonna start now, anyhow I ended up selling it to trade to get shut, I got £8500 for it and it cost me new £14600 a 2010 twin cam, 18 months old, never again.

Best regards Stretch.

£6.1k loss on an 18 month old TwinCam 12GSA bike, sheesh:eek: - who says BMW residuals are rock solid:rolleyes:

:clap:clap:clap well done for the decision............ :thumb

hardly the fault of bmw or the bike

no dealer buys in at sensible money. presumably you bought the bike from a franchised dealer, then tried to sell it back to them? couldn't have picked a less cost effective way to run a vehicle really :blast

Just didn't want to end up with an unreliable bike so cut and run. :blast

Best regards Stretch :)

Hi
Out of interest, the additional time and costs for:
- screen
- suspension
- forks rework
- luggage
comes to how much?

Just musing on how much extra it costs to turn a stock bike into something better.

Ta
It doesnt need those mods, just a matter of personal choice. I've put an MRA screen on mine which was £135 and took 5mins to fit, 4 bolts. Luggage depends on what you get, same as any bike:nenau. Were you thinking of getting one then?

Does not need the mods any more than the GS does (Or most other bikes for that matter) but they all suffer (to varying degrees) from cheap suspension, poor fuelling, (Emmisions laws no doubt) crap screens (The GSA may be an exception - but they want an extra £2k for a taller screen and bigger fuel tank) don't come with luggage (or at least not when you have already knocked £2600 off list price)

The bike was as good as a GS out of the crate, better in some areas, not so good in others and generally needing the same sort of mods to take it from pretty decent to f****** awesome.

Screen was about £140 from Chainspeed

Suspension for mine was about a grand (Fork Rework including new springs and top of the range Wilburs with 3-way damping and remote pre-load adjuster) you could save a few hundred quid on a more basic shock - still cheaper than £1200+ for the two shocks I fitted to the GS.

The shock is half decent one up, but struggles two up (exactly the same as the GS did) The forks are a bit harsh, but work OK - I just like really nice suspension :D MCT supplied and fitted the shock, reworked the forks and set the bike up while I waited.

The full SW setup with 3 boxes and quick release racks was over £1200 with all the fittings, fixtures, inner bags etc - still a lot cheaper than some stuff out there and IMO a good compromise between cost and quality.

Spent about £2.5k on the GS and a similar amount on the ZZR1400 I had before that, reckon the Tenere will pan out about the same by the time I get it how I want it.

Luggage, shocks and screens hold very good resale value if you sell them seperately, I got around £1500 back on the ZZR and GS bits and certainly got £1000 of value out of the kit whilst I owned the bikes :D

Give the stock screen a chance. At my stumpy height of 5'8" the stock screen is excellent. I believe it may be less good for taller riders. For me, after the 1150GS with Tobinators the stock S10 screen provides a serene bubble of air all the way up an indicated 130mph (as tested on a German autobahn, obviously).

haven't ordered MRA yet so will sit tight and see how i get on with stnd screen.

Bit of a bizarre statement. So you were happy to lose a shed full of money because you thought your bike would become unreliable once the warranty ran out:nenau Too much time thinking about what may happen and not enough time riding methinks.

If you buy a new bike from a dealer and sell back to them, the depreciation is staggering no matter what badge is on the bike and of course teh more expensive upfront, the more the hit.

Lots of people find lots of things make them uncomfortable, I really love the twin cam GS and if I had a crystal ball and could have been certain it would be reliable I would have bought a brand new one. If instead of throwing £1750 of extras in to the deal if they had offered me a 5 year warranty I would not be on the Yamaha now.

I know my Yamaha could go wrong, but I personally think this is far less likely than the GS going wrong, and the cost to remedy will be far less.

Does not matter if I am right or wrong, and I don't think anyone could prove which bike is more reliable, or if the GS is less reliable than bike x,y or z.

All I know is mine had a high number of issues in a short space of time compared to most other bikes I have owned, and there is a long list of common faults, maybe they affect a small percentage, maybe they don't - again who can prove this :nenau

I know you have been over the moon with your GS, and I have seen the thing, it has obviously stood up very well and not been pampered, but other owners have had mulitple final drive failures, FPC, EWS and ABS problems and all sorts of horrors affect one bike in far fewer miles.

To me the GS is a gamble, you may get one that does 100k with no major failures, or a dog that repeatedly lets you down. Maybe far more are extremely reliable, but it is still a gamble - and one nobody knows the real odds for this gamble and I only gamble if I know the odds.

I think the Yamaha is more of a known quantity, maybe a good one is not as good as a good GS, but I bet a bad one is nowhere near as bad as a bad GS.

Two years after launch there are no major weaknesses showing up on the Tenere.

I think it is fair comment to at least say early 1200GS models were awful, and FD, FPC and EWS failures were just part of BMW ownership and that may be what has poisoned my view of what otherwise is an amazing bike.

I now have the faith in my motorcycle you have, I just ride it whenever I want with no concerns

Nice post, I see where you are coming from. :thumb2

Just a thought to others though. There is nothing like a single make forum (ish) to highlight and raise the profile of a relatively small number of reported faults. I suspect that there are plenty of owners who haven't had problems but don't rant about it. Clearly this applies to any make of course.

If the bike looks anything like the (over TT'd IMHO) photo posted then its a beaut.

Congrats on your S10 purchase. as an owner myself just clicked over 2years now i'd say the stock sussies are really not that bad considering and the stock screen can be shifted up a notch to see if that sorts it. I've only felt the need to slightly increase preload and damping on my rear shock once and the front is on the factory settings. I've also shifted my screen up to the next mount holes and rolled the bars back in thier clamps a notch. I cant compare to the 1200 (never ridden one) but is shed loads better balance than my old 1150GSA and I never noticed it being top heavy except when at a standstill pushing it and its still feels less top heavy than the XT660Z tenere I had before it. The only thing I think may steer me away would be a 1190KTM but not until is been debugged by 1st year owners (and then it would be a heart over head decision I suspect).

Tks for that, Im interested re handlebar adjustment, I see some ppl have moved them somewhat. Does it make "reach" easier or something else?

Got my new super10 yesterday, am I happy.....?? you bet your as* I am.

I made the right decision for me. Got the matt grey colour. Pic dont do it justice.

I was getting some shoulder pain, I suspect from riding long distance(ish 300miles ) with my elbows up. I found that rolling the bars backwards in the clamps has eased my natural tendancy to try to lift the elbows . I'm awaiting a pair of rox risers to see how much adjustment they give to bar position on stock hoses, I wasnt going to bother but since the KTM1190 has been struck off my wish list (too expensive and not a huge game changer to the S10 in my book - electronic suspension isnt an option I'd pick) so plan on keeping the S10 for a few more years at least and felt it was worth investing in some (more) farkles. I may also fit some pro taper bars if the Rox risers lift the bars too much . I also found rolling the bars back meant I had more seating options as I could move back on the saddle as opposed to sitting close to the tank. PS I'm around 5ft11 average leg arm length .

PS just for random info I'm getting between 40 and 50miles to stuttering dry on reserve and I suspect I must be a heavy throttle user given that my K60 scout rear seems 1/2 worn after just over 2kmiles bearing in mind lots of peops report getting huge mileage out of them.
enjoy the S10 its a great bike...
