Bit of a bizarre statement. So you were happy to lose a shed full of money because you
thought your bike would become unreliable once the warranty ran out
Lots of people find lots of things make them uncomfortable, I really love the twin cam GS and if I had a crystal ball and could have been certain it would be reliable I would have bought a brand new one. If instead of throwing £1750 of extras in to the deal if they had offered me a 5 year warranty I would not be on the Yamaha now.
I know my Yamaha could go wrong, but I personally think this is far less likely than the GS going wrong, and the cost to remedy will be far less.
Does not matter if I am right or wrong, and I don't think anyone could prove which bike is more reliable, or if the GS is less reliable than bike x,y or z.
All I know is mine had a high number of issues in a short space of time compared to most other bikes I have owned, and there is a long list of common faults, maybe they affect a small percentage, maybe they don't - again who can prove this
I know you have been over the moon with your GS, and I have seen the thing, it has obviously stood up very well and not been pampered, but other owners have had mulitple final drive failures, FPC, EWS and ABS problems and all sorts of horrors affect one bike in far fewer miles.
To me the GS is a gamble, you may get one that does 100k with no major failures, or a dog that repeatedly lets you down. Maybe far more are extremely reliable, but it is still a gamble - and one nobody knows the real odds for this gamble and I only gamble if I know the odds.
I think the Yamaha is more of a known quantity, maybe a good one is not as good as a good GS, but I bet a bad one is nowhere near as bad as a bad GS.
Two years after launch there are no major weaknesses showing up on the Tenere.
I think it is fair comment to at least say early 1200GS models were awful, and FD, FPC and EWS failures were just part of BMW ownership and that may be what has poisoned my view of what otherwise is an amazing bike.
I now have the faith in my motorcycle you have, I just ride it whenever I want with no concerns
