Finally got to ride an 1190 Adv.....

For those that think the standard 1190 is lacking off the tarmac....:thumb

Nice:thumb
But that rider could make an R1 look good in those conditions:D

What I was getting at is how the bike's compare with us mere mortals on them on knarly Welsh trails:)

Any GS except mine that is:D

Have to say, the more I ride the 950, the less convinced I am about the 1190 :blast

I'm running one tooth less on the front sprocket and it's at least as fast in the real world as the 1190, feels and handles just like a big pogo offroad which the 1190 doesn't plusI think it looks much better.

Yes, my opinions are biased because it's such a good offroad and road bike, so if it's just a brand new road bike you want the 1190s as good as anything.

Out this afternoon on it to get myself a bit more focused before the TAT, it just fits right:)

The 950/990 shook the big trailie world upside down because they were bought for their offroad ability, the 1190 will be bought for it's one great feature on tarmac, that awesome engine but there's plenty of competition out there.
:beerjug:

Tim,
Please can you tell me (PM?) Where this is? I have just picked up a 950 and fancy a little gentle off road bimble!! :D

The R is the best colour but I am not convinced about the 21/18 wheels for all the road work and I do like the electronic suspension.

Matt

The latest issue of Bike tests the R and they say it is a better road bike than the standard 1190.

I've got it on my ipad so will try copy it here.

I'm with Tim on looks etc.

I would love an 1190R but cannot justify selling my 950SE.

The only benefit would be better brakes and handling as my SE only has
a single front disc .

The extra grunt would only get me in trouble and the 950 motor is my favourite of any KTM and I've owned them all in one form or another from EXC250F to RC8 with the 1190 in full power mode !

The 1190R looks better than the standard bike but I prefer the looks of my SE over all of them !!

side stand spring

There's a recall for the side stand spring on the 1190. I had mine replaced today, took 5 minutes. Check your dealer to see if it needs / has been done.

.............but.........any idea what sort(ish) of money the few 990's left are going for Tim?

Have a look at leisure trail's site - they were advertising the last of their 990's at £8195 I think!

Yeah, I was there yesterday, two blue and two white R's - a lot of bike for the money and very tempting!

A good write up indeed. I see the tester agrees with me re the excessive fork dive - ok Davy F? :augie

Missing the point again, Trev. That's on the R with no electronic suspension.:augie

To be fair, of course it has fork dive, especially in Comfort mode. But in Sport, the dive is greatly reduced. And maybe that's the trade-off for suspension that lets you know what is going on underneath you and not the numb feel of the front end of BM's. ;)

It was the std one I tried and it had the same defect :rob

On the GS you get stability.

Ok, you win. The KTM is terrible, nay, virtually unrideable and they should all be recalled because they are so unstable they're dangerous. Heck, just yesterday, I had to apply my brakes and the front of the bike did dip a little as I scrubbed off some speed. I nearly had a heart attack and thought, why have I bought this machine with such boingy forks ? I hope they'll be able to sort it out at the first service, otherwise I'm going back to WMB with their front end set-up that has built in anti dive, stability and loads of feedback like every other bike on the market.

Good to hear :beerjug:

I'm sure the big H will be v generous with a trade in allowance :augie

I went back at the weekend for another test ride, this time with Amanda on the back.

To cut to the chase she wasn't impressed at all and, the initial excitment of my first test ride over, I had a few niggles too, not deal breakers but niggles.

Amanda found the hand grips badly positioned - too far forward for her. The foot peg height was ok but her boot (MX boots) kept catching on the exhaust guard and she couldn't get that side comfy.

She also commented that the bike didn't feel as smooth or planted as the GS; I was making a real effort to ride the KTM as smoothly as possible too.

Worst of all though were the vibes. She generally found them intrusive throughout the rev range but at 80ish she found them really bad. Given any long M-way slogs are gonna be at that sort of speed that's not good.

Amanda really wanted to like the bike and kept coming up with excuses to like it but in the end admitted she just wouldn't be happy setting off on any extended trips on a bike like that.

For me, I found the vibes more annoying than before and also found the handling suffering slightly from being two up. No more than most other bikes but I put it down to a combination of a soft front end (it IS soft) and being spoilt by a WBM telelever which just doesn't notice pillions.
I was also aware of heat from the back pot/exhaust. Similar ambient temps to my first ride so I put that down to wearing jeans this time - who knows

Soooooo..........it's back to the drawing board.

They had some very well priced 990R's in (£8,200) but as much as I like them they are too focused for what I want.

Amanda's been spoilt as she's only ever really pillioned on a GS and I can't help thinking that that's where I'll be heading again :nenau
Possibly a WC when I have confidence in the 'issues' they seem to be having or a low mileage 2nd hand TC GS....................or maybe a Stelvio?

A real shame though, I soooooo wanted the KTM to fit my needs :(
