finding space to fit an autocom on an 2000 1150GS

After reading through this forum and phoning autocom, the consensus is to fit the unit next to the battery under the tank. However, no matter how I try and fit it in, there simply isn't enough space unless I put it behind the battery where it's either going to get covered in gunk or be where I can't get at it to make any adjustments without removing the tank.

I'm using the new superpro automatic, so the box is a bit bigger than previous models although autocom say they've fitted several in that place. Can anyone else confirm they've done this and how do you find enough room to the side of the battery, on mine there's not enough height under the tank or width between the battery and the tank bolt bracket.

I'd rather put it in the space where the tool kit was but the damned silly ridges made that a useless space unless I can carve it up and make it more suitable.

Any other alternatives welcomed

I have my Autocom and radio where the toolkit goes. But to do it I removed the tool tray altogether. My tools now sit in a Touratech tail bag that sits on the rear rack. I looked at the tank option too but thought the same as you, too little room to fit-and be able to make adjustments.

Not ideal, but works for me.

I have my Autocom and radio where the toolkit goes. But to do it I removed the tool tray altogether. My tools now sit in a Touratech tail bag that sits on the rear rack. I looked at the tank option too but thought the same as you, too little room to fit-and be able to make adjustments.

Do you find that without the tool tray things stay sufficiently dry? I know vern is working on a replacement box but so far you have to cut the mudguard to make it fit, which I'm loath to do.

I'm contemplating butchering the tool tray, taking out the sections that are notched and then just putting a few layers of duct tape over it to seal it.

Yeah pretty much. I occasionally unplug things and give the connectors some WD40 but water hasn't really been a problem so far. Touch wood.

Thanks, in my searches I hadn't found that one. The area that he put everything, the empty area under the tank, when I took the tank off this morning I found that everything under there was covered in a layer of greasy dirt, not somewhere I fancy putting the intercom tbh, plus I'd really like to be able to have an easier way to adjust settings. There will be times when I used the in helmet speakers but sometimes I'm likely to use my in ear monitors, on longer solo rides, being able to tweak the volumes would be very helpful.

I saw someone had mounted their intercom underneath the warning light panel and I've checked mine will fit under there quite neatly, though I'm less happy about the security aspect of that. I'm thinking perhaps butchering the old tool tray might be a good option.

Hi Rich, sorry if I got the phrasing wrong, didn't mean to imply that you were in any wrong, just that I was struggling to find how you would fit it that way on mine. Could you just clarify, when you say the 'back of the battery' do you mean this section facing the rider's seat when you take the seat off? On mine, the battery cables come across that side of the battery which would prevent me attaching the box to the battery with velcro.

The space under the tank itself, in the area towards the front wheel of my bike has got covered in oily grime, not sure if that's an issue with the bike or that it just wasn't cleaned much. I shall have to look into finding the best way to clean grease from around all the electrical stuff.

I'll take another look at the setup this afternoon and see if perhaps the battery cables can be routed elsewhere. Once it's all done I may try and arrange to come and see you at autocom as on the previous bike (which I only had the intercom on for a couple of weeks before buying the gs unexpectedly, I just couldn't get the volume sorted in the helmet, it kept triggering the vox no matter how I adjusted things, despite your helpful discussions by phone.

I have a small bag that I clip to the rear of a bagster tank bag, with a bwm type socket, the autocom is in a freezer bag with the cables sticking out, then cable tied to keep moisture out.

I only put the Autocom on when doing any distance, and can move it between bikes, or if I am on my own and I want music, I just plug in my ear monitors straight into my zumo.
