Well, that was a fun weekend, with some 'firsts' thrown in for good measure. The challenge: to fit a Migsel mount, Autocom and BMW fog lights to my 1150 GSA. I had everything planned, including printed instructions and advice from this site ...

The Migsel mount was very easy to fit. Nice clear instructions are provided. My only decision was how to run the wires, which turned out to be very easy and neat, trapping them behind the screen mount, as follows:

I'm very pleased with the final look and positioning of the sat nav with the Migsel set up. I've previously run a sat nav on the handle bar brace, and was never too keen on having to look down to see the screen. With Migsel's set up the sat nav is at eye level ...

The Autocom was 'interesting'. As already well documented on here, there's not a lot of room under the seat of the 1150. I ended up finding a configuration which works on top of the air filter. In total, mounted on top of the air filter, I now have the following: Autocom, Autocom interference 'box' part number 1285, BMW alarm unit and the diagnostic plug. The tank fitted back on with no problems. I'm also running a Kenwood 3201 which I've velcro fitted behind the fuse box. I've had to remove the tool kit from under the seat, but I keep a tool kit in the top box so this is no issue. Pictures of the set up below ...

To power the Autocom, as also documented on here I tapped in to the Motronic relay (the thicker green and black wire). I've never soldered before, and was slightly nervous about hacking into my wiring loom (which was an understatement). I considered a scotch lock approach, but thankfully didn't go down that route.

Based on advice from here, and elsewhere on the internet, I adopted the following approach (not the best job - but for a beginner I have to say I'm very proud of the result):

1. Locate Motronic relay wire and carefully strip the outer sheath (I did this VERY slowly and carefully with a sharp stanley knife);

2. Carefully separate the wires to form a hole;

3. Thread the Autocom power wire through the hole;

4. Twist the wires together;

5. Solder; and

6. Cover with self-vulcanising tape (or whatever the correct term is).

The fog lights were very easy to fit, once I'd remembered an additional bit of the wiring harness:blast Being the BMW kit it was simply plug and play following the instructions ...

All in all an enjoyable weekend. Though the garage was slightly less tidy by the end compared to when I'd started ...

Nicely documented. Love the GPS mount.
Isn't it great/satisfying when a plan works?

My weekend project was re-installing the wheels (tires changed and balanced at dealer). Only hitch was cheap tools...8mm hex sheared off in the socket ... Must buy some good quality hex tools!

Top man! I'm finally hard-wiring my autocom to my 1150GSA this week and those pics are a real help.

Nice job and well thought out. You might want to look at putting the GPS wiring under the clocks deflector (silver shield above clocks), it can then drop down to a power point around that area and means no wires show.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm guessing it'd require drilling a hole somewhere to run the wires through?

Let me know if more pictures would help. I took quite a few, including taking the tank off etc which was the first time I'd done this on an 1150.

No, you don't need to drill at all. If you remove your scree and the deflector it'll be obvious where the wires can go. If I get a chance tonight I'll post up a picture of mine.

Hi,

Well, congratulations! You managed to put the autocom where I tried with no success :thumb.

I will just try the configuration you used, well done mate.

Did you try conecting the GPS to your autocom? You may get a buzzzzzzzz. If you do, PM and I will tell you what I have done to fix it (annoyingly, against GSRich recommendations).

Cheers

Thanks. I've tried the GPS through the Autocom and it worked. However, the bike wasn't running (not sure if that could make a difference?). I've heard of this problem though (buzzing issue), so in anticipation have fitted the Autocom part number 1285 into the GPS feed (you can see the red box under the diagnostic plug on the picture). I'll shout if there's still an issue - many thanks.

Alright, yes you will have no problems with that part.

Enjoy your riding :cool:

:thumb2

Anymore would be great.

Had the tank off numerous times (just bought another quick release so I can leave the balancing tube on the bike and not have to re-thread it each time) for cleaning & fitting things, but it's always handy to see how other people have fitted things.

Here you go. The wiring just drops down behind the clocks.
