Can anyone tell me how I find TDC on the 1200gs :nenau

I want to do the tappets, and looking in the manual it's not clear how I actually know it's at TDC.
The book (Haynes) simply says turn over the engine till the valves/tappets are loose.

On every other bike I've had (including my partners Airhead) there is an aperture of sorts allowing the visibility of the Mark's on the flywheel to help align things properly. but this is not mentioned in the 1200's manual.

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers Val.

Remove spark plugs. A long screwdriver placed carefully down the spark plug hole and turn the engine over by hand and you will feel TDC. Hope this helps

I did this recently following the r1200gs.info instructions and it was pretty straightforward. The exact position of TDC does not seem critical to the adjustment - once the followers are off the cam profile it doesn't seem to change. I checked several times as I wanted to get it dead right and soon realised the exact position didn't matter. Plugs out makes for a much easier turnover on the engine, although you can do it with the plugs in turning the rear wheel in 6th.

Just bear in mind as Steptoe taught us at the recent bike school one side will be a tdc on the compression stroke and the other will be on the exhaust stroke so find out which is what and where and do that side on the comp stroke before rotating it and doing the other side on the right stroke hth

Thanks for your replies gentlemen. John your link is especially useful with the photos.

Cheers Val.
