I don't normally ride on motorways but had to today and after an hour at 85mph my fingures had a tingle sensation (like pins & needles). I don't grip the bars tight and haven't noticed this before, is it normal cos it's a real pain? any ideas on causes?

Vibration...simple as that.

If you carried on, and did it regularly, it could turn into a proper syndrome.....White Finger Syndrome I believe they cal it, often a 'disease' suffered by miners, jackhammer operators etc etc.

I get it as well, usually at around 90-95 where mine vibrates harmonically.....

I just speed up and it goes ;)

You can get dampers, and some recommend sticking piles of coins up the bar ends or similar.

Vibration White Finger is a form of Raynaud's disease. Caused by lack of blood to the extremities. In extreme cases it can cause gangrene.

You might find using the heated grips alleviates the symptoms a bit.

Also balancing the throttle bodies may reduce vibrations.

As noted above tingling in any extremity is usually caused by a lack of blood flow to the tissues.

I have done a bit of personal anatomical research on this issue as I'm interested in bodies (well Matron, that's my excuse;) )

If you look at the diagram of the arterial circulation to the hand below you will see that the blood gets to your hands via one of two main arteries. One on the left and one on the right.

I believe that the position of your hands on the grips over a period of time causes a restriction of flow in these arteries and hence the tingling - which is simply the start of numbness.

If you allow the flow to return via just one of the arteries the tingling goes. You can do this (stangely) by gripping a bit tighter with your thumb, index finger and middle finger and lifting the heel and side of the palm off the bar. Therefore you do not have to lift your whole hand off the grips which may not be desirable at the time.

This (I believe) is due to the fact that one of the arteries is allowed to reflow and supply the tissues, ending the numbness.

The above explanation may be a crock of sh*t - but it works. :)

Which confirms my status as an old woman!

I suffer from this problem - just 20 mins at motorway speed and my hands are numb. But I have found a gadget that helps - its a £4.99 plastic moulding from M&P (no connection) which wraps round the throttle and allows you to rest your hand on top rather than grip the throttle. Did a 320 mile test run last week and no tingle / numb hands at all. Part 503589

Its a bit of a pain when not on motorway but you get used to it.

Which also goes to prove my hypothesis. The hand is still on the grip with this device therefore still being vibrated - but is relieved of the arterial constriction across the palms.

What happens to your L hand Birdseye?

Another explanation

I had this problem for a while. It was carpel tunnel syndrom,, whereby the nerves to the hand become compressed by the ligament that holds the carpel bones together. It can be cured either with a cortezone injection, or surgery. I had surgery, and no more problems

Go and see a doctor.

You might want to investigate changing your handlebars, as the rearward sweep of the standard bars puts a lot of pressure on the outside edge of your palms, forcing your wrists to a funny angle.

Looking at the blood vessel diagram above, it starts to make a bit of sense as the outer artery could be compressed by this wrist angle.

I changed to Renthal Twinwall bars - see thread here

It's made the bike much more comfy for me - a very good mod IMHO and quite easy, apart from the bar ends which I've now sorted (and am getting some custom ones machined at the moment - if they work you can look forward to a full conversion solution from Mr Nippy).

Completely out of sync, but are your throttle bodies in tune with each other (not spiritually of course)? Imbalance will cause, or exacerbate vibration.

My left hand also went numb, but in this case its easy to take the hand off the bars for a few seconds and restore the circulation.

Its not quite the same as the carpel tunnel problem though narrow writsts (as in carpel) make it worse. I've had both wrists operated on for carpel tunnel but my hands still went numb.

Talking to a GP friend at the weekend, he gave much the same answer as Dahoum - the numbness is down to the restriction of the blood supply that feeds the nerves. Cold weather makes it worse because cold causes your blood vessels in the extremities to constrict. Presumably therefore, heated grips help. The angle of the bars and the way you grip them matters too - wrong angle at the wrist worsens the prob as does too tight a grip.

But I can certainly recommend the throttle rocker gadget - that deffo helps.

Vibration whitefinger from hell?

Mountain bike gurlz recommend gel:-

But if it still gets badder....

...you'd better get a bladder!

Do I detect a slight whiff of the Harley Davidson Sportster /Stena Stairlift joint ownership brigade with the above product?

Just logged on for first time since yesterday and seen all the above, thanks for the advice. Carpel tunnel, vibe white finger and Reynaulds desease I didn't realise I was in such a bad way! :D ;)
