Hi,
I have an ancient laptop (at least 7 years old - I'm too tight to by another one as it is only used at home for internet browsing). Recently, after an automatic update Firefox seems to be painfully slow.

It will pause for ages when "looking for..." and when a new tab opens it can go for literally minutes "looking for" the website.

I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions or possible cures.

Cheers,

DA

Hi

1. Download a copy of ccleaner run it and get it to (1) check your registry and remove all the errors it finds (2) remove all the files you no longer need (3) show you what is running at startup and remove anything that you dont actually need.

2. Download a copy of JKDefrag and get it to defragment your disk. (This will take quite sometime)

3. If this doesnt work remove the latest version of Firefox and install the previous one.

I had this problem once over; a mate told me to 'clear my cache'. Click 'Tools'>>'Clear Private Data'. 'Cache' is the third one down. Tick any others you might want to clear as well. It did make a noticable difference.

Before you try re-installing the older version of Firefox, try uninstalling then reinstalling your current one; I've done tis before with some success.

Now I'm gonna plug something. Try installing this:

www.cloudantivirus.com

Let's just say that, after installing this last weekend, my machine is unrecognisable compared to what it was before. Not just Firefox; everything. E.G. boot-up time down from ~ 3 minutes to 43 seconds.

Download that, close your internet connection, uninstall your current anti-virus, install that, then re-connect to the web. Don't start a scan, it's already done that. Give it twenty four hours or so, and see if you notice a difference in speed. If not, you can always go back to your previous AV if you like it.

Dave.

P.S. Do the ccCleaner bit mentioned above as well.

PPS The machine I'm talking about above is an eighteen month old laptop. But I've had similar (pro-rata) results with my eight year old Desktop; 1Gb CPU and 380Mb Ram.
