last night whilst using firefox, it just crashed and re-booted pc?
when re-started firefox all bookmarks gone:( unloaded firefox and reloaded, but still won't save a bookmark? whats happened:(

They've gone.

Your crash must have happened at just the point when the bookmark file was being written. To save the file, the old file is trashed before the new contents are written and the crash must have happened at just that point. Some software safeguards against this by renaming the existing file, writing a new file and only when written, deleting the old file meaning that if this ever occurs you don't lose the data.

The alternative could be that you have a hardware fault and the disk's on the way out. I'm surprised Firefox took Windows down with it.

Firefox makes backups of your bookmarks file.

You should be able to import them from

C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profilename.default\bookmarkbackups

Launch Firefox.
On the menu go to Bookmarks, then Organise Bookmarks.
Click on File, then Import, then select From File, and click Next.
Browse to the file path I showed you above, and click on one of the bookmark backup files that contains your data.

If you use Windows Explorer to look at the files first, double-clicking on them will show you the contents in your browser so you can select the appropriate one.
