Well, not a huge one, but I went London - Newcastle without using any main roads, and turned up fourteen hours and five hundred and fifty miles later.

The bike performed flawlessly, with the only downside being how utterly depressing so many towns are to the East of the A1 between London and York. Mile after mile of identikit grey places, with people sitting on walls smoking. After York, it was all as great as expected.

I got caught in a blizzard over Hartside, which chopped Penrith off the itinerary, which was a shame, but I went back over the next day with a friend on his ZX10. I was struggling a bit to keep with him on the more sweeping roads, but the roles were reversed when the roads dropped down to being mud-covered tracks. I'd thought that I was able to drop him on the military road back, but it turned out the he sensibly tends to stay below 100 on the B roads.

The route back was direct down the main roads. 300 miles in 210 minutes meant that I was pushing on a bit, and I have to admit that I found the original screen's noise to be very annoying. I'd happily accept a bit more wind pressure fr a drop in the buffeting and noise that I sat through for so long. Over 100mph, it was getting deeply unpleasant, so a new screen is going to be needed if I do any long, fast routes.

Secondly, I think that a tankbag is going to be necessary. What recommendations do people have for a good one? It got to be a bit of a pain messing around looking for wallets, phone, iPod, book etc at each stop.

Overall, it was a good trip. The bike is noticeably better for me than the last GS, so I am pleased to have made the change.

Well done mate :thumb

Now get across the channel to the Alps and have some more fun, where they can fine you but not give you any points!

Thanks. I had the impression that they were supposed to be £85 from BMW, complete with warranty, but it seems that this one is more on Ebay.

If that's the fair Ebay price, that's OK, but I'm surprised.

The open road?

I am pleased to note that the speed limits have been abolished in the UK.

Congrats on the long trip NorthernBoy, always good to get miles under your belt.
As to tank bags its worth having a look at these, I can strongly reccomend them as I bought one for my 1200GS, there very well made & fit without the need for sticking a velcro pad to the tank as per the more expensive BMW item.

Oh, they were made voluntary a few years back when they replaced police patrols with cameras. Nowadays the government only wants us to stick to the limits for a few hundred meters of each journey, and they mark these out with yellow boxes by the road, which is nice of them.

The decision to stop enforcing them anywhere else means that they went the same way as that law that said that you can shoot a Welshman on a Wednesday in Bath.

If it was not for the godawful noise drowning out my Chesney Hawkes, I swear that I could have dropped through the 200 minute mark, although central London is a bitch when it comes to keeping the average over 90...

High speed options

"....that you can shoot a Welshman on a Wednesday in Bath...." Thank you for that useful piece of information. I had one in mind if they manage to win the six nations - now I may have to plead 'extenuating circumstances. Coming back to NorthernBoy's screen problems, I was discussing this in the bar this morning; the best idea offered was to buy the standard screen from the Fireblade; then when difficulties arise in attaching it, fit a Fireblade underneath it.
