Bloody BuMW's - I've had my first failure after only 8500 miles :tears

Luckily the duff dipped beam bulb could be swapped for the main beam one as a temporary measure until I obtained another H7 bulb (thanks to the owner of the Fern Villa guest house, Ballachulish) :P

Aye, they're crap aren't they?

Can't imagine why I kept mine for getting on 7 years :eek

I feel your pain man, happened to me twice in 35000km, once in Spain and once in France, those damn BMW with their H7 bulbs, we should get a refund!!!!!

We live in parallel universes, Steve. The only failure on my GS (so far) has beena headlight bulb at just over 8,000 miles. Mine failed to light up after a choppy crossing on a Seacat to the Isle of Man.

Weird, my dipped beam failed at 8000 miles as well :nenau

Put a £1.50 replacement in today from Amazon, be interesting to see how it compares

Dont make light of the issue, Itr's just another of bit of characture that we love about the crap we bought.

my only failure too at 10000 miles - put in a philips super dooper bright one - £35 but £ for £ a lot cheaper than HID and much brighter than standard

Whatever you do Don't use Osram Night racer's, they bow after 60 ish hours, me and a mate ordered 4, they all blew, we complained to Osram, they sent us 4 more and the same happened again, gone back to cheepo H7's now!

Bu***r I just bought two!:blast

Perhaps I should sell my bike before it reaches the fateful 8k, apparently the fault is not covered by the warranty.

Me too

Just replaced mine today - fifth bulb in 27k miles/2 years

Mixture of Halfords, Osram, whatever Belgium/Switzerland could offer

Toying with the idea of a HID kit, mostly 'cause I'm sick of the H7's blowing,

however I have some concerns over effects of HID on headlamp.

Are my concermns justified, or just a bit wimpy?

HID

I asked my dealer about fitting HID and they said don't bother it causes too much hassle! They told me you need to cut the plastic cover at the back of the light to make it fit and then there is sealing issue's, also you will get a fault on the dash saying headlight failure and they will keep blowing bulbs. There is the added problem of hiding all that wiring and ballast especially if you fit dip and main beam. Finally they told me that if I were to trade it in for a new one that they would deduct the cost of returning it to standard from the value of the bike! Soooo I have fitted Phillips extreme vision H7 and they are the biz! took 5mins to change and no hassle.:thumb

Warranty

Perhaps I should sell my bike before it reaches the fateful 8k, apparently the fault is not covered by the warranty.

Regarding warranty's is there anybody out there actually had any warranty work done? Brake discs warped, feel it under braking. Not enough for warranty. Battery failed changed under warranty then billed £153, not flat enough apparently. Rear suspension soggy as a do do's butt gonna see if that is do'able under this warranty dream I have. Probably not soggy enough only bottom's out on corner's solo with no luggage.
Dont start me on HID lights will ya, failed the day I picked bike up, still waiting no main beam for 10 month's now. Getting loom and bits to change back to normal lamp's.
Gotta work now so no more time to discuss warranty's :blast
Stay safe Jake.

Dont do it, got em people see ya, bonus. But they burn chrome off reflector on lamp, and they blow bulb's too then how much? ouch. MOT failure some say to. Changin back to candles.

Now I'm really p***ed off

Thanks for that - I think that pretty much covers my concerns, and is the reason I'm a bit reluctant to go down the HID route.

However I've had yet another bulb blow (5th in 30k miles) & trying to replace it resulted in the retaining spring pinging off.

So the spring is either:

a) inside the headlight shell - but I can't see it at all, will take it off at W/E & check

b) under the plastic tank cover somewhere - a bit reluctant to strip all this down on the off-chance

or (most likely)

c) somewhere in a petrol station on the A61 in Germany

Does anyone know whether/where I can get a replacement spring, and if not whether the HID kit uses the standard clips, or a different mechanism?

G
