Well my 2009 GS SE finally showed up today!! :)

:D

What an absolute joy to ride! Smile on my face the whole time.

Feet reach the ground fine, position of everything is comfortable - except for the indicator kill switch, seems to be located in a place that's hard to get to for me, making my throttle control a bit rough, why it's not on the other side like on jap bikes... but I'm sure I'll get used to it...

Spent a while driving slow around Richmond Park just getting used to the grab point and getting comfortable with the feel of the machine, then a short blast down the A3 (when I say blast, I actually mean a quite timid ride but up to speed limit) and back up to Chiswick and home to Kew. Not keen on Hogarth roundabout... cars changing lanes all over the place... f-ing crazy...

It's a lot lighter than I expected and a lot easier to maneuver. Got freaked out by a "Brake Failure" light on console, so didn't take it for a spin until I rang a local dealer who said it was just an ABS test. Phew...

The front brake seems a bit grabby, bit off and on... is there a way to make it softer or more responsive, an adjustment?

The rear brake head seems small and I suspect the lever was bent in cos it hard to get to... so I bent that out a little and will buy an extension. I'm guessing it's small for off road guys that are standing on the pegs a lot?

When at the lights and bike is slightly leaning to one side, revving the engine seems to lift the bike back to vertical... is that the stability control or some kinda centrifugal force from the engine?

Delivery guys forgot the panniers and the bike not in quite as good condition as I'd been told by dealer... but gives me something to do I guess... it's ok, just not like those i saw at the beemer showrooms which are polished to the 9's.

Yesterday I did I refresher course on Suzuki 650 and a Yamaha Frazer... SO glad I did it, the instructor was very helpful, I learned a lot, and possibly most importantly, learned a I got a bloody lot to learn!!

I'm such a TWAT (Terminate Winky After Turn) at leaving my f-ing indicators on. :blast But this won't be a problem for long.

So much of what I read in the AIM book made sense on the road and very glad I read it, but I think I'm going to get some more instruction once I have a better feel for the machine... Will do BikeSafe in a couple of weeks and than start the AIM course proper.

Can't wait for the weekend and taking it back out again...

Don't think so I am new to the GS and I found my one to be exactlly the same. I just think it is small and tucked out of the way.. have to have some sort of deformity to us the thing, however the brakes are blindingly good even when compared to sports bikes so no problems really. The bike handles great in my opinion although I have only done about 70 miles. Compared to a fireblade I found it refreshingly different :D. I know its a lot slower but thats actually the good thing I find about riding the bike you don't feel the need to ride it fast all the time like you do the blade.

Nobody has stolen it yet then. Did it fit around the back of the house? :D

Excellent that you like the bike. You'll get the hang of it..... and roundabouts, too.

I will be putting together some rides around the SE corner of the UK during 2012, why not come along?

There are also some 'Wanders' lined up which may appeal, too. See the 'Travel' section.

Don't forget the SE 'Get together'. See SE section.

Torque effect. It's quite normal. Much less marked on the 1200 than other earlier models.

If it bugs you, your dealer can change the duration of the self cancelling indicators. I have mine on maximum so I can get all the way round a roundabout and the exit before they turn off.

So you bought it unseen? Thats brave !

BTW - Am just around the corner from you in Chiswick...

@Windy Well perhaps will bump in to you (not literally) sometime cos I'm in W4 often... used to live opposite Sams bar which was my local.

Also @Nice n Fat - yeah bought unseen... probably a bad move but was 2k cheaper than same bike from dealer (09 SE) and I'm hoping it's a tough machine!! Only things "wrong" are cosmetics really... and the "sargent" rear seat is just the cover... back light is melted a bit from previous owner gluing (!!!) the top box holder in, great...

@Wapping will come for a ride for sure! I need a few weeks just to get rid of my TWAT problem and feel comfy on the bike before making an ass of myself with other riders... although that is most likely anyhow!

Got it round the back no problems, it really is way lighter than I thought... got the mother of all gates being constructed too so feeling safe about it now!

Panniers arrived while typing this post, so will have look at them shortly... but I really must go and do some work!! This GS thing has taken over my life a bit lately!!

I've not found the SE section yet - must explore more!!

Last question...

The front brake seems a little "grabby" bit sudden to come on (bit on or off) compared with the instructors Fazer I rode a few days ago, is there an adjustment to help this, make it more "spongy on first taste of braking?

@Wapping

Actually still can't find a SE section, would you be so kind as to point it out to this fool :)

The brake and clutch levers are both adjustable for span, the distance the lever is away from the grip.

Your owner's hand book has the details. But, from memory there is a small knurled knob 'inside' the hinge of the lever. Twiddle it round and give it a go. You won't break anything.

Congrats on getting the new bike Justin.

When I saw your username it reminded me I've been letting my guitar practice slip and I need to dig out the Beginners Songbook, get back back on your website and start over again!

Happy riding.

Bob

Welcome to the higher levels of GSA ownership :thumb

Take it slow to get to know the foibles of the beastie - there are many :eek

Ask whatever questions you like in here as long as you are aware there are certain who don't 'get' the superior nature of the 12 - so keep the 'thick-skin' suit on :D cos you'll get some 'interesting' replies.

(they complain about whats asked in here but strangely can't keep away - thats what the green god of jealousy does)

I can't believe that somebody who can play the 'git fiddle' like you can, will be bothered by a silly indicator switch position:D

Good luck with the new bike and thank you for your website, it's a great help and has just made me pick up the guitar again after a month or so off:thumb2

Top stuff, and long may you stick around and to echo was my dad says above, keep yer thick skin suit on and a smile on yer face and all will be good:thumb2

If you think the indicators are weird wait until you need to hit the horn button :D

Enjoy the new bike :thumb2

Andres

PS You WILL get used to the indicators :thumb2

@trebor glad you picked it up again, it's almost as fun as as GS ;)

@Dahoum cheers, there are certainly some interesting characters about, but I'm pretty thick skinned and as I'm fond of saying... Those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind ;)

@Shep I'll be around for some time I expect, I survived a few stupid questions and a hi-viz debate so I've done the initiation of fire... I hope!! And there are a lot of good folk here as well as the tossers ;) (pun intended!).

So what kind of oil was best? ;)

@Ottomunch

Yeah I started using the horn a bit after turning corners ;)

I just found a Wunderlich thing that makes the indicator kill switch bigger and easier to get at - it is still bothering me a little... perhaps the gloves are a little loose on my thumb too... I'll be watching for that when I buy me next pair!

My thumbs obviously work in weirder ways still. If I ever reach for the Horn button to tell a SMIDSY they're blind to the 1/3 ton bike bearing down on them, all I succeed in doing is silently telling them I'm turning left in a really angry way..........:blast
