Just found out they also offer real time traffic directly to your GPS. So you can see when there are traffic jams ahead !!

Blimey, traffic avoidance too!

So, BMW are soon to be selling its Bluetooth helmet, and here we have a GPS that will talk to it, perhaps they could label it up as the Bluetooth Navigator III :D

Mike O as far as i am aware TomTom software is not Mac friendly!! Shame.
Here is a link for a more detailed review of the TomTom software

http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/tomtom-go-5.php

I like the idea only worries are 1) Cost - all this bluetooth stuff is going to be at a premium 2) I hate the fact that you do not get detailed maps of ALL of Europe. This will no doubt be an extra cost to buy detailed maps to each country. It is great it will get you anywhere in Europe but most times it is when you get there that you need the most help.

I am now buggered I have spent ages trying to decide on a GPS unit and was about to place an order for a 2610 tonight when luckily I checked here first. Now I have to re think, well at least wait to se what price TomTom put it at. Like Mike Werner I hope TomTom use this as a chance to steal a lot of Business from Garmin.

Good - the lack of Mac compatability with Garmin software was the clincher when I bought a new laptop the other week, rather than a Powerbook...

TamTam from EQUINUX might help.

TamTam makes TomTom GO Mac compatible! _
With the release of the Mac OS X compatible program TamTam, we now offer a solution for the popular GPS navigation system TomTom GO for the Mac. (Please note that TamTam supports only TomTom GO and not TomTom Navigator for Palm/PDA)

_ _
What is TamTam? _
With TamTam, the ease of TomTom´s Windows software is now available to you, the Mac user!
Simply the fact that TomTom GO has a design which is similar to the iMac makes the TomTom especially attractive for Mac users. But, without TamTam, there is no support for Mac.
Our software allows you to easily manage your TomTom GO system - download maps, new voice tones, update your TomTom GO and backup the entire system - all from the comfort of your Mac!

All you need is your TomTom GO and the TomTom GO CD´s.... even the USB cable is already included! Let TamTam take care of the "communication" between your Mac and TomTom.

For Tuned In. Tom Tom use Tele Atlas maps, which are crap for Ireland. Garmin use Navtech and while still crap the coverage is better than tele atlas. Navetech appear to be serious about mapping Ireland as I noticed them recruiting in the Sunday Life for mobile mappers based in Newry.

The annoying thing is that the OSI and OSNI already have accurate digitised mapping of everywhere in Ireland (NI was the first area of the UK to have a full digital map data set) I've got vector maps and Ortho-photography for GIS in work for the whole of the North Down area that is accurate to 12.5 Cms........but the charges they have for the mapping are extortionate........as in £10,000 pa for an area 5X18 miles roughly!!

TomTom motorbike GPS

Its good news that there is increased competition for Garmin.

BUT...be aware that TomTom ONLY offer email support. Garmin offer telephone support, AND you can get through to someone knowedgeable very quickly.

I trialled the TomTom Bluetooth GPS for my O2 XDAIIs recently, and had problems. Their email support distinctly told me that this software was not supported on my XDA, yet the sales blurb said otherwise. TomTom failed to help contructively, and to be honest, email support for this kind of product it never going to be satisfactory. The PDA needed a reset if it lost comms with the Bluetooth GPS antenna, as opposed to sorting itself out.

So, I used TomToms incorrect support statement to get a refund as the good were not fit for purpose. Went straight out and bought a Garmin 2610, and what an improvement.

TomTom - if you are lurking in these forums - email support never works. Telephone support please. I wont even consider your products until you offer this.

Having had extensive experience with Bluetooth products in the recent past, Bluetooth is very flakey and unpredictable. Sounds like a female?

More reading material on the TomTom Rider, sorry, its likely slow to load
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24983

Other features of TomTom RIDER include:

• Itinerary planning to allow multiple stops on a journey
• Location finding using full postal codes in the Netherlands and Great Britain

TomTom RIDER comes with a docking kit and power cable to connect to the motorbike or scooter battery, various mounting options, a Bluetooth headset to fit inside a helmet and pre-installed country map.

Their website (at least their Dutch version) has a phone number to call....

Why the hurry? Ireland and Apple

As this is a new product with unknown pricing , capabilities, support, early failure modes etc perhaps backside on fence is the best position until the heroes have done the beta testing.

I expect the Garmin mapping of Ireland will take time and not be a great priority due to the perceived small market. Suppose they have little experience of getting directions on this lovely island!

AS my life has been made miserable by Microsoft once too often this last week I am going to change over to Apple anyhow, and keep this piece of crap in the garage for mapping and motor records

Personally, I like the 3D effect. Although I can obviously read the Garmin line maps, the 3D image just seems more "user friendly".

I thought this was a feature on some Garmin units already.

Tuned In GIS. Geographical Information System. Maps linked to databases so that you can save information about stuff your looking at on the map. Can also be used to measure distances areas, locate sewers electricity poles, mobile phone masts. Dispersion models for pollution plumes, bin lorry routes, bus routes, traffic volumes, contaminated land...........If you can think of anything that you can locate on a map you can identify it and save information about it in a GIS.

If you past the link into your browser it will take you to a planning application by South Dublin Council. Click on the Aerial map button and it will show you an aerial photo of the location of the application and if yoy click on it it will give you all the infor about it. If you scroll round the photo you can find other applications and do the same thing. Public access GIS
