Trying not to.. :augie

Can't believe how much damage I did to mesen. :blast.
( again ) :(
Luckily doctor took out the cannula in my right arm this afternoon as the risk of another kidney bleed is low.
As long as I continue to rest.
Which I am.

;)

Take it easy !

Has full off-road maps for whole of Europe.
Updates over WiFi so no need to plug in to a computer
Let’s you plan and download routes from an iPad or tablet /phone or share routes wirelessly with another XT.
Syncs to phone to give you live traffic, weather updates, texts etc .

Apart from that ......erm.....:-)

Thanks, I wasn't sure. The bummf said topo maps, which are not usually the same as maps which show unpaved routes for motors. I guess the unpaved routes are still not routable, that would be hard. It also wasn't clear if it used dual vector/raster maps like the GB Discover (now topo great Britain pro) maps, which work in Montana's but not Zumo's. If it doesn't work with those its not much use for off road, at least in the UK.

The bumf mentions the Garmin Explorer app for routing on the iPad etc, but then after downloading the explorer app i found it doesn't work with the xt, and the Garmin Drive app is needed to sync data from your Garmin Explore account to the XT and to get traffic data etc, so it wasn't clear what app would be used to do the routing, and if its local (ie straight from device to xt) or still needed internet to download from your Explore account.
What maps are used on the tablet? Is it like base camp where to read some maps the GPS needs to be connected or are the maps stored on the tablet?

So, i did read the headlines but they're short on detail and i do a lot of off road (more correctly unpaved road) in Britain, Europe and elsewhere so unless it does do all of this stuff, with the capability to add maps, then ill stick with the Montana or 276 for trails and a bit of road, and the road zumos for road bikes.

Any info from anyone who has one and has tested the above would be gratefully received

I have a 276cx and apart from the fact it's not the fastest unit in the world it will do everything
It has one of the best screens around and the buttons are great to use on the move
It runs OS mapping a bit slow but good enough...But is fine with OSM or Garmin vector maps
and the one good thing is it fits in the montana mount
I recon one Garmin sort the XT with a few updates it will be a great road GPS...But if you are in the UK you want OS mapping for off road IMHO

With a bit of frigging around you can plot routes in base camp and transfer them to the XT
But if you are not careful the XT will recalculate them and they won't be as you intended
Unlike the 276cx that runs routes just as you planned them

Thanks for the info Garry. I had a feeling it wouldn't run the os maps, and without that it's basically a road gps, though it sounds better than the 590/595.

One thing that drives me mad on the 595 is its stupid danger alert for everything from a bend to a toad crossing point which means its permanently flashing a warning with no way of turning it off - this sounds like it has the same "feature".

If Garmin could combine the Montana functions with the 276 screen and joystick, the overlander database and decent memory and processor they'd have a winner!

You’ll be right as rain when we go for our cream tea in a few weeks.

See how I’ve upgraded from cake to cream tea, now you’ve said you’re paying! ;) :D

Pretty sure you can turn it off?
The 396 had a similar feature. Turned it off immediately.

But hey, if you can’t work out how to turn off the message to the world that you have an iPhone and use Tapatalk, what hope is there? :D

BaseCamp is not hard but if you find it so, use one of the many Google map based alternatives (see sticky)

The option to disable recalculation has been a feature of most Garmin devices for several years. It would be surprising if they have dropped it for the XT. But if most bods only ever allow the device to set their routes (as opposed to the bods creating their own) it would not be beyond imagination to hear that Garmin have listen to bikermates’ demands to drop it, as “I think it’s shite, mate”.

No, you can turn off audible warnings only but the warning banner still flashes away every 100 metres

So, got mine yesterday & all set up.

Updated everything over wifi & it only took 30 mins!!!!

Big screen, brightness is BRIGHT (but will test this in the sunshine soon), and the HD resolution is really rather marvellous.

Basically this could mean that his nibs & I can be aligned when we got lost :D :D :D

As per my other reply, and as you would have noticed if you'd bothered to read the instructions you so diligently posted before rushing to post another smart arse comment, that's audible only that can be turned off

Whilst there are lots things I don't know about GPS and garmins, I've worked with nav systems going back to LORAN C, I've had pretty much all the garmin bike devices ever as well as TomTom, I currently use 590, 595, 276cx, several Montana's, Scenic and other iphone mapping apps, I've created and compiled my own maps, etc etc.

So there!

"Enabling or Disabling Rider Alerts
You can turn off individual audible rider alerts. *Visual alerts appear even when the audible alert is disabled*

Select Settings > Map & Vehicle > Audible Rider Alerts.
Select or clear the tick box next to each alert"

Pps. I notice in your self appointed role as Garmin guru you've also patronised Garry, who, since he travels further than the Alps and ventures off the tarmac, and has also worked with custom mapping on just about every type of GPS going, just might know a bit more than you.
