Picked up my `new` 1100GS today from Suffolk. When mike was showing me round the bike he took the oil filler cap off and there were two rubber O rings instead of one. We kind of assumed the extra one must have been there for a reason but we could not get the cap back on with two rings so I set off with the one in and kept an eye on it. As soon as I opened up the bike as I left Fressingfield it started weeping! I stopped and had another go at fitting the extra O ring to no avail. I went about another 10 miles and it just got worse and my boot was covered in oil. I stopped again and tried to get that second ring in. I noticed that the plastic bit in the cylinder to which the cap located was not seated correctly and I used one of the tools to pop it out. I noticed it too had an O ring but this piece was a little distorted. I reckon the oil was actually seeping past the outside of this piece rather than the cap itself. I put it back in making sure the locating tab was in the correct position and got going again. It was still leaking, but nowhere near as much. Not the best intro into BMW ownership possibly. but everything else was good and contrary to what most say I took to the bike without any problems and I reckon it will prove perfect for me as I wanted the riding position of my XTZ660, but with more oomph.
I was hoping my first call to a BMW spares company would have taken a bit longer.
Is this a common problem?
