Not quite sure when I last owned an 1100GS but i think it was around 96,anyhow on a bit of a whim a couple of weeks ago I bought a 99 1100gs Granada Dakar with what appears to be a genuine 42,000mls and 2 previous owners. It was not taxed or mot'd so I was unable to ride it,but it all looked and sounded ok so I decided to take a bit of a chance and made a bid which was accepted.

The bike is in pretty good condition, all painted parts are good but most of the powder coat is well past it's best and the wheels could possibly do with a rebuild as could the rear shock.

So having tinkered for the last couple of weeks to get the bike roadworthy this morning I got my first oppertunity to take it for a much anticipated spin,I've come to quite like this bike over the last couple of weeks.

Bearing in mind I also own a 2013wc I was concious not to try to compare them but I guess it only human nature!

I jump on the bike start her up "snick" it into first gear and set off on what is going to be a fairly short 15mls for my first ride.

Two miles down the road I've confirmed everything works good the engine sounds sweet and the gearbox is up-to now as good as any boxer gearbox I've ridden.

Then it suddenly dawns on me this thing feels as though it's been carved from a solid piece of granite it just feels so solid and deliberate.

Twenty five miles later and working at full temp the engine and gearbox are an absolute peach and it just feels so very nice to ride and there appears to be nothing that can't be done to turn this into a truely lovely bike.

I can't resist when I get back home so I jump on the 1200 for a quick blast,it does without doubt imho do everything better, although I must admit the gear box feels nicer on the 1100,but I'm not here to compare, two very different bikes that promote two very different riding styles.

Am I smitten with the 1100? you bet I am so much so that I'm considering doing a full retoration to bring it back to as mint as my limited ability will allow, only downside is I would need to move on my XR250 tomake room and to fund the work.

If I decided it's the road to go down I will try to put it up in the restoration section,so if i ask some stupid or repeated questions over the coming months please accept my apologies, although I won't be able to start for a couple of months due to lots of work needing doing in the new house.

Good stuff, Steve

Know what you mean Steve

The 1100,s get under your skin Had mine for a couple of yrs now and am clocking on the miles.

Mine is good, low mileage and now mint . I prefer it to the six speed 1150 it replaced and it goes well.

Its easy to work on and nothing I can,t fix myself without the aggro of servo brakes.

Yup it feels hewn out of solid granite.

Its here to stay :thumb2

I rode my 1100 this weekend for the 1st time in a while, I love it :).
It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling every time I go out on it & I do enjoy leaving my mates on their sports bike behind when the roads allow :)

Mines a battered dog,but its replaced my hayabusa as my number 1 daily ride.the busas now collecting dust.don't you just love em.

I've had an 1150GSA and a 1200GSA and now have a 1100GS and out of them all i prefer the 1100.

The 1150 felt lardy in comparison and I didn't like the reliance on can bus with the 1200. I know most things on the 1100 can be dealt with by me at home.

I should have kept this, 30k miles and virtually mint, it cost me £1200 :blast

Hi guyes.
I love to read your stories.
I have had my R1100GS now for 9 years and I love it.
182.00 km in the clock. And working fine.
Nice to read R1100GS beats Hayabusa.

That looks lovely,I'm hoping that this time next year(going to do some minor work and ride it this summer before starting any major stuff) mine looks something like that, not the same colour of course as the paintwork is very good and I don't want to touch it.
I have the original exhaust which looks as though it's never been fitted, and a budget of around £700 so hopefully I should be able to get it something like, although wheels rebuilding and a new rear shock should but a fairly hefty dent in that budget.

I'd been on the lookout for an R100rs and had not really given the 1100gs any real thought, but I'm glad I spotted it and went for a look.

i loved my 1100, but the only thing that pissed me off was the short seat to front pegs gap.

didn't want to go the lower peg route and the seat was high enough, but it was a mini problem for me over long distances

well I'm with you on that one I've just gone back to an 1100 after quiet a few years and bikes. went for a spin sunday and realise how great these bikes still are. theres a few jobs that need doing but nothing major and mostly its just cosmetic stuff.
i do prefer the 5 speed box too but still do like the 1200gs but can't justify the extra expense . i like that they're cheap and cheerful but still very capable and reliable

nice bike old codger , and tim you stole that bike ! how the hell did you get it for £1200 :eek was it off mad bid . com :aidan

Right place, right time.
Most 2nd hand bikes are overpriced imo, the 5 speed gearbox was a peach and I loved it, rode it for a year but it's no 1150adv :beerjug:
