First Service Today

First Service this morning, 617 miles. Excellent service as usual at Balderston in Peterborough.

Supply the oil yourself. I've done it a few times when they've been taking the piss with the price - and you get back the unused portion.

Did they actually put Castrol oil, as per BMW's recommendation? I always read that Castrol was among the best oils for motorcycles, but my dealer would always put some other brand in my GS and RT. Not necessarily a bad brand, mind you, but not Castrol. Now, maybe BMW's recommendation is but a little advertising deal with Castrol.

Yes Castrol Power 1 Racing - and yes BMW recommendation is often just a marketing deal that they set up with an oil supplier - they change allegiance every few years too.

As long as you put in an oil that meets the handbook specification you will be fine.

All done, it seemed to take a long time 1.5 hours, they only charged for 0.75 hours......

As I heard from the Ocean 'do' last night, BMW take the average of the times of 3 BMW employed techies in ideal circumstances as the time they will expect customers to be charged for certain work. Typically I would expect jobs to take a bit longer in the dealer's workshop and good on the dealer for charging for the lower hours.

Look out for the BMW dealers Oil deals,
I had one from Allan Jefferies two years ago, it was 4 oil changes for £50.00
They have re done their sums now and I purchased 4 more oil changes for £90.00 at the GS launch. Its only the oil, not the filter or labour but makes a massive difference to service costs
