First to second

I find that if I try and change up to first and second but only get to neutral, then it is a pig to get in gear. When I knock it up to second it goes in with such a cruch that it makes me want to cry.
What should I do if this happens again?

Yeah, I know it's my fault for not changing gear properly, but if this happens what is the safest (causing least damage to the box) way of getting back into gear?

Erm try this.....

If you fluff the change from 1st to 2nd then it would be a good idea to coast to a slower speed and try to re-select 1st and have another attempt. Be more positive with your selection, have you checked to make sure that the change mechanism is not lacking for lube in the pivots etc.

Its an horrendous noise and you are not the only one to find themselves in a similar situation......ain't alf noisy innit?
