Been 'doing' France for a few years...
Pick a destination to head for, but be flexible.
I tend to stay off the beaten track to get the twisties without the trucks or sitting on a motorway, that makes 200-250 miles the limit to be done with room for feck ups, pictures and having a breather (pressing flowers etc).
The north of France is a dump, need to get into Normandy for it to be 'nice' and then it's better as you head south and east.
If you don't want to use motorways, don't make routes that avoid them right from the port or you will waste a couple of hours getting 20 miles up the road, boot it out of the port (watching for plod, so not speeding) and get 100 miles out of your system in 1 hit, then get off the route and head wherever.
I can recommend the Gorge Du Tarn and the D906bis (the whole area around there to Millau and across to Albi) there are some pics of us on this link http://www.gabfesters.co.uk/Gabfesters/Photos.html
Tend to use the F1 hotels as they are cheap, secure, clean and about £15 with breakfast if your sharing a room.
