After numerous days spent with my lads sitting beside rivers & canals in the Kildare area without so much as a bite, never mind bring home the dinner I decided on Saturday that it was time for a bit of cheating :D :D

It was grey & damp at home ( the weather - not SWMBO's humour;) ) and I figured if we went to the trout farm in Annamoe - which is the other side of the Wicklow mountains from us - we'd have half a chance of catching something ( other than a cold ) & hopefully the weather would be better, or at least if it wasn't they would get fed up quickly & I could go home & watch the MotoGP qualifying ;) ;)

As we climbed towards the summit of the Wicklow Gap the weather got worse with the top below the cloud. However as we descended the other side things improved - while it was never sunny at least it was dry & quite warm.

We stayed for nearly four hours & in the end were thrown out as they were locking up but it was the best bit of crack the lads have had with fishing rods :D :D - the two older guys caught 2 each & the little fella got one - I was running backwards & forwards helping them land their catch, unhooking & despatching the fish & constantly re-baiting hooks :)

Once we got home I cleaned out the catch & we had a beautiful dinner of trout, new potatoes & green beans :thumb :thumb

Forgot to add a pic of the happy fishermen :D :D

Nice one, Jockser, great to see kids involved in the sport. The secret for young 'uns is action - nothing worse than long spells of catching nothing. Even losing fish is better than not catching at all. 'Put 'n' take' fisheries like Annamoe are a good starting point - when the kids have confidence that they can actually catch something, then's the time to move on to greater challenges and try for the wild fish. Keep at it ;)

Trout, Bait, Whatever next !!!

Trout caught with "Bait"
Whatever next !!!

Good for the kids I suppose, when they get a bit bigger you'll have to get them catching on the Fly

I caught and ate a 2 lb Perch recently :D
It tasted surprisingly good. Meat was white like Cod and taste was somewhere bewteen that of Cod and Trout.

Tight lines,

Piggers

Thanks for the replies Guys -

Shuck - inactivity was the problem - they were beginning to think there were no fish left in Ireland - even sea fishing for macarel produced nothing :(

Tim - I was expecting comments about the fence, weeds, etc - but the 'green eel' escaped my notice :D

Piggers - you're right about the bait of course :D - my old dad is a committed fly fisherman & when he hears about this I'm expecting an ear full :D :D .Hes hoping they follow in his footsteps - seeing as I never did - but he doesn't have the patience anymore to teach them :(
