Yes I know they are the work of the devil, yes I know I should be soundly thrashed within an inch of my life, tarred and feathered and run out of town but I like having one of the damned things when out and about pootling to lose the Aerostich and helmet so I've been playing with fitting the Caja Sahel box that Civil made to my specifications for the 1200.
If your of a nervous disposition look away now, don't continue with this thread, hit the back button you have been warned.
I’d been looking at options for fitting the Caja for a while but it was not until I read John Armstrong’s thread about boxes that a possible solution revealed itself in the form of hydraulic pipe clamps which had been used by another owner to mount a massive Pelicase to his bike.
As I ride the bike with the solo seat fitted I intended to mount the box over the rear wheel rather than hanging out over the rear sub frame so some Googling found a supplier for the hydraulic clamps and a quick phone call had a selection of 15 and 18mm fittings including stainless steel plates and bolts heading my way.
After a bit of experimentation I found that I only needed 15mm clamps and initially fitted 4 of them to get the position to drill the aluminium plate I sourced from Civil, it's the one he makes for the 1150 GSA and gives a solid base to mount to.
Colour choice of the clamps is limited as they are used in the food industry and are colour coded, basically I could get them in white or bottle green, I went for white to match the bike
Having got the clamps in position I bolted them in place, positioned the plate and marked the position of the clamps on the plates for drilling. Luckily the rear existing slots cut for the 1150 GSA lined up perfectly with the rear clamps letting me bolt the plate in place before marking.
While the clamps are very secure on the tubes I decided to add one at the front on one of the cross tubes to totally eliminate any possibility of the plate sliding back or forward.
Drilling the holes took a bit of time, basically I drilled and refitted it for each clamp to make certain they lined up perfectly.
Civil's boxes don't use a quick release mechanism and are bolted to the mounting plate, nt an issue to me as it's a 5 minute job and makes it totally secure.
First impressions are good as when riding you just don't know it's there and meets me requirements for storage on the move.
Still have some tweeking to do as I may use countersunk set screws instead of the hex headed bolts but I can confirm it's rock solid, the clamps work perfectly on the frame tubes and could be used for any number of mounting applications.
Right let the piss taking begin, if you've read this far after the warnings you've only yourself to blame!
