This will be my job at the weekend (provided Nippy Norman pulls his finger out with delivery)

It looks a straightforward and simple job which worries me a little as they seem to be the jobs that go so wrong !

Are there any tips tricks or things to watch for other than making sure that the nuts and bolts dont shear by oiling in advance which i have done ?

Doing the same thing tomorrow actually. Have you bought new Exhaust gaskets? I haven't so will see what happens when the headers go on. There is a brilliant YouTube vid of a Akra system being fitted by Max BMW - watch it and learn. Take a note of all the torque settings they mention. They use a slip cream stuff? I have graphite grease so will use a little of that. I will have to dig around for a hook thing to place the springs......

Mine are used, so should go together easily.......Umm Max BMW used a soft mallet, but I think the headers they did were SS not titanium.

I hope that I can still use the front Hooton engine guard with the Akra headers? Anybody know?

I wont be doing this job at the weekend as i have just had an E Mail from Nippy Norman saying that they are out of stock for the next 2 weeks !

Bugger !!

Very easy job to do and get new exhaust gaskets. Be very careful undoing the header bolts and use plenty of WD40 on them as you do not want them to shear. DAMHIK:blast

They should fit with Hooton guard no problem.

I have both fitted on mine without a problem.

Anyone know the part number of the header gaskets?

I fitted a laser system to my GS and did not see any gaskets when i was removing the old system  I thought it was a bit strange but fitted the system anyway. I think i can here a leak but it is hard to pin point.

Watch the vid I referred to earlier and you will see them. Motorworks are your friend :rob

Fitting was fairly straightforward........ish. Getting end can and valve replacement pipe off - ok. Unclipping Lambda Sensors with the H&B crash bars in place - PITA. Taking Lambda Sensors out - PITA (had to borrow a 22mm spanner and they took some shifting!). Head bolts - OK. Set up Akro headers with supplied springs - OK (once I found that an old wire stripper was a good tool to locate springs!) Install headers to find out the fecking H&B bars were fouling one lambda sensor! Feck feckity feck! Decided to remove H&B bars (will probably sell them!). Akro headers now line up with Y piece and installation fairly straightforward. Need to use a block of wood and weighty hammer to shift Y piece into position and soft mallet to persuade the headers to seat fully home (no issues with marking the headers etc).

So, if I have Akro headers, I can't use my H&B crashbars :-(

Installed original can to see what difference the headers made. Loads, sounds better, pulls, revs and goes much harder now. With Exhaust valve removed, Acc Module, Headers and Shell Optimax, the bike is very smooth and pulls much harder (esp 2 up). Will see what the new end can will be like next weekend.

Bike is a 2012 (62 plate) R1200GS Triple Black with 13k miles.

Fit some Wonderlich rocker cover protectors. Not cheap but very solid and have a sacrificial wear plate. They negate the need for engine protection bars though not the fuel tank protectors if it's a GSA.
