Fitting back box plate

I have to fit a back box plate to carry my vario back box (needed to transport laptop). The dealer was going to supply/fit it as part of the sale, unfortunately they can only supply and won't fit. The reason being a bolt should fit into what i assume is a captive nut, unfortunately the threads in the captive nut have been knackered by one of the previous owners. I now have an issue of how to get a fixing to hold the bracket for the fixing plate.
I've attached a photo of the offending hole for you to look at, all i can think of is getting someone to tap a thread for a bolt of a larger diameter? There is no way of getting to the back of the captive nut to use a bog standard nut and bolt.
Any other suggestions?

Weld the hole up, drill a new hole and re-tap?
If you can't weld you ought to be able to find someone local who can.

0r just helicoil it. Easier as I prefer to pull the Ecu`s before welding late model bikes.

I doubt it, i bought it from Gloucester Its an 06 1200 last 3 letters MGJ
I assume the hole could be rethreaded but i'll have to find someone local with a tap and die set

I'm not a fan of transporting a laptop in a topbox, on the tripod mount at the back of a GS - the movement (due to the box being well-cantilevered out over the rear wheel) seems a bit bit excessive?


Of course, if it is a company laptop - that might not be a worry.

Fecking plastic thread and bolts...
I had the same problem on my 05 1200.
SamD had the same problem on his 1200 30yr model.
whilst trying to fit a H/Becker Rack.
has to re tap thread in the end..........................

Probably would at a price!
Their attitude was, they couldn't fit it 'standard' and couldn't deviate from this

Didn't think of it being a plastic insert type of nut

I had this when i bought mine aswel. Stud had broken off in the threaded hole.

In the end i opted for GIVI Monokey Top Box & full panniers. Never wanted to pretend i was Charlie or Ewan anyway

I found a local mcycle repairer , my bolts siezed and then broke in the holes, he drilled out the residue and rethreaded for me , £10.
