Hi all,

Having just invested in a new Sytem 6 helmet I find it doesn't fit into the vario top case....thanks BMW:clap

I'm looking at a Givi V46 or E460 top case - would anyone know if the System 6 fits in it OK?

Also any opinions on the SR689 or 684 racks welcome - there's a few people say the 684 is prone to breakage?

Cheers.

I don't know about the 689. Tried to Google to see the difference, but couldn't find a definitive picture. The 684 was what I had and, yes, it did break. The problem with using a big 46l box is that it is easy to overload it, particularly if, like me, you do a lot of long distance touring. With the 684 rack, the box sits way out over the back of the bike and relies on those two brackets for extra support. On my bike, it was the two 'bolts' under the BMW luggage rack (that the supports screw into) that sheared, leaving my overly-heavy top box bouncing around on the plate, unsupported.

ETA a 46l Givi will take most types of helmet. I have routinely kept Shoei and Roof helmets in my top box and expect that my Schuberth would fit also, but don't know specifically about the BMW System 6. (I am also a bit of a pea-brain, so it is possible that the shell of my XS helmet is smaller than a man-sized one.)

Thanks for that, good to have some first hand experience. You're right about the 689 sitting lower but you have to remove the old rack whcih seems a bit of a waste. What do you use now?

I think the system 6 has a bigger vent on top but I guess at worst case it'll fit on it's side.

Cheers.

Still have my original 46l Givi, but fitted to my 1150. The Givi plate looks more secure than the 684 - sits securely on the BMW rack without extra supports. But I've learned my lesson the hard way. I'll be far more cautious about the weight of the topbox - I notice the Givi site says max 6kg for either fitting.

I fitted the 692 baseplate - a bit more money but very strong and no problems with panniers or anything else. I have the E55 Maxia Tech which looks good on a black bike - no garish red reflectors! Seems very strong and takes 2 full-face helmets!

I have the SR684 and the supporting bolt that goes into the back of the bike snapped (had to drill it out). This was about 4 years ago.

Givi sent me a complete replacement rack with stronger stainless steel bolts which is what that use now. Never had a re-occurance of the problem.

Except for that it works great and is very waterproof.

Had the lock fail but a replacement is only a few pounds from Givi itself (the box is over 8 years old)

We had to drill out my brother 684 as well - he now uses the 689

I have always used the 689

The rear bike is a standard height '07 with the 684 fitted (before it broke) with a Touratech bag under the rack as well which makes the arms that break difficult to see
The front bike is a factory lowered '08 with the 689 fitted.

Just tried the helmet in the R/H pannier and it fits.....I'd have thought this was the same as the top case but apparently not. Just hope my bid on Ebay doesn't win the Givi box now....:censor:

He he didn't realize you had the side Vario would have told you to try that if I had.

Oh well, my stupid for not trying it. Wonder how many others have dome what I almost did? Probably all far too intelligent for that......:augie
