I want to fit an r1100s front wheel to my 01 gs, with an r1150r speedo drive. I've spent some time rummaging around for posts on this topic, but the nearest I got was DEN who was about to have his 1100s wheel machined to accept the speedo drive.

I can't find anything on what machining was actually done though, no joy with the search facility either. DEN if you're reading this, or anyone else who has done the job, can you give details on what to do please?

1100s speedo drive

Ho-hum,

No response, so just took the gs wheel off and took both front wheels to bits. Some things I've found so far:

1. the spacer length in the speedo drive bodies is different, the r1150r is about 5mm longer than the gs one.

2. the left side bearing on the 1100s is further from the centre line than the gs, leaving even less space for the speedo drive.

3. the internal shoulder in the hub will need to be removed and the alloy tube spacer between the bearings shortened to move the bearing inboard the requisite 5mm or so to allow the speedo drive to fit.

4. the outer 5mm of the 1100s hub (which holds the seal) will have to go too, but apart from these wee hiccups the job's a canter:D

I'll have a bash tomorrow at modifying things, I'll take some pictures too incase it works. You never know, someone might be interested.

I had it done to a K1200rs front wheel before I fitted alloys to my 1150.

It can be done, but the easiest route is a straight swap to a wheel off the 1150r/rt.

Anyway, if you still want it done.....

I took both the K and GS wheels and the new speedo drive to a local engineering shop, told them what I wanted....sorted...:thumb

It needs machining so unless you've got the kit to do it.....:augie

Why ...

... are you doing this ? If it's to accurise the speedo reading fit the one from the RT (2.97 ?) as it goes straight in. Mind you, you may disregard all the above if yours is not an 1100 :blast

Because he want to fit it to a 1100S wheel. IIRC, the straight swap only works for a standard GS wheel.

bash, bash, done!

Righto guys,

I managed to remove the metal where neccessary, with very basic tools:

It took two hours to remove the outer 10mm of the hub with that, something that might otherwise be used to break out of jail.

Anyhow, after removing the internal step to relocate the bearing, I also reduced the bearing spacer by 10mm. Then I filed down the speedo drive washer, which I fitted into two little slots I made in the hub:

The new r1150r speedo drive I bought had to be altered in length to fit, but when that was done it all went together ok, looked like a bought one.

Until I spinned the wheel that is.

I bought the wheel for £45 on ebay with some known damage to the rim edge, but described as true. P!sh. The damage to the rim edge was worse than I'd expected, deep gouges and a fair bit of metal missing, but usable. However, spinning the wheel in the forks showed a wobble where it had hit something when the metal gouging was going on, enough to bend the spokes and disc carrier posts slightly too. The discs had a noticeable runout, enough to make them bind slightly in the calipers as the wheel turned.

But I'd gone to this much trouble so I had to at least give it a try, so I popped the tire on and took her for a spin. The bike rides beautifully, no wobbling or binding detectable and I might just have left it at that. But I saw a brand new r1150r wheel on Motobins website, so I just phoned up and bought it. I'll use the home-made one until it arrives, then I plan to make the 1100s wheel into a clock, maybe sell it on ebay:D

edit post?

Sorry for bumping this up, but I don't seem to have the edit capability yet. So here's what I meant to add to the previous post:

The front wheel I bought from Motobins was £225 in their sale, should have it fitted in time for the boat to the Island on Sunday. Going over to marshal for Manx gp practice week.

Glad you got it sorted(and the rear fitted). I took the easy option with my 06 1200,dropped it off at Pidcocks for the 600 mile service just before TT06 and picked it up 2 weeks later, serviced and fitted with ST Wheels.Sailing for MGP Sun 26th and trying to get the Tossers over there to sort out a meet during race week.Keep an eye open in "Areas-North West" for details before you go.
