Advice sought regarding fitting the filler neck half of the SW-Motech tank bag system.

Having a 2010 12GSA I have bought (from Nippy Norman) the appropriate fittings which involve removing the entire filler neck and cap but am a little cautious about leaping in wielding my Torx driver.

Is there anything to be wary of when removing and replacing the filler neck (apart from trying not to drop the screws into the tank)? Are there seals which will need replacing or drying before refitting? I had an S4 Siphon kit for my 1150GS which included replacement filler neck seals and wondered if I need such things for this task.

TIA

Ha bloody ha:augie

However, despite that I will offer you my pearls of wisdom.

Removal of the cap is trouble free but I would recommend stuffing a cloth into the filler neck otherwise you can guarantee to lose a screw into the tank.

Swapping the OE ring into which the cap is fixed is also straightforward. The hinge of the cap is fixed to underside of the ring by two very tight screws.

Fitting the cap into the SW-Motech ring is also trauma-free.

You are now back at square one with a filler cap that be re-fixed to the tank. Before doing so you attach the plate to which the SW-Motech bag fixes which is a chunk of horseshoe-shaped plastic. When I screwed the cap, ring and horseshoe assembly onto the tank I found that the four bolts which attach the horseshoe to the cap ring touch the plastic tank cover. So I removed the assembly and filed the bolts down so that they did not protrude beyond the top of each nut.

The filler cap doesn't now flick closed as it did with the OE ring and I'm not sure if the latch tongue on the SW-Motech ring is too long or too thick. As it only needs firm pressure I'm reluctant to attack it with a file without more evidence as to what needs adjusting.

Fixing the locking plate to the underside of the bag is also fairly straightforward. I have a SW-Motech QUICK-LOCK ENGAGE BAG from NN bought because I want to carry not much more than money and documents in the tank bag and this was the smallest that seemed to follow the tank shape of the GSA. I found that the locking plate has to be absolutely as far forward on the underside of the bag as possible if you are to avoid fouling the bars (something which I may solve by reversing the bar mounts, but that's a different story). Before drilling any holes make sure that the release for the locking pin can be pulled. Note also that the two bolts towards the front of the plate have been fitted in new holes as the original ones are beyond the stiffening plate inside the bag. The bag 'perches' on the mount and looks quite odd from the side but I imagine will do exactly what I want. I'm certainly looking forward to easier fuelling than I experienced with Baglux bags or the TT tankbag for my 1150GS.

Hope that helps.

i looked at one of these bags fitted on a 1200 gsa 09. The bag followed the contour of the tank . It appeared to be fitted the other way round to your fitment. The shorter leg of the V shape on top of the tank the longer side down the sloping back of the tank.

It was not standing proud away from the tank.

Interesting. All of the fitments in and on the bag - that is the reinforcing board and the press stud to hold the quick release cable - prompt one to fit it the way I did. I wonder if the one you saw had been 'persuaded' to locate the other way round. I might drop an email to Nippy Norman.

Thanks

The two that are pictured: are they the 'GS' bag? I looked at that one but it's much bigger than I wanted. Interestingly, if I turn my bag round it fits perfectly and completely clears the bars.

I suspect that despite what I was told - thanks NN - it's not suitable for the 1200GSA.

I'm tempted to bodge it with a new plate on the inside so that I can mount it the wrong way round. However, I'll wait until I've heard from NN.

That looks perfect. Unfortunately NN don't stock it otherwise I might have bought that in preference to the one I have . . . :-(

Have sent NN a pic of the current arrangement. Will let you know what he says.
