..so it was time to hit the Trails yesterday and have a wee spin with fellow GS'er Fritz (out on his pink Serow today though )

Sun's up and the temps were good as we set off from my place to do a few trails, up towards Masham, where I refuelled and we headed off to Grewelthorpe and out over Ramsgill, but not until I'd lost Fritz, just the once (the price paid for no mirrors)

We met a couple of horseriders, in a lane and opened the gate for them and we chatted for a few mins, who were very much in favour of use of the trails too

As we got further along the trail we saw another bike in the distance, turned out to be a guy up from Bucks, who was camping over in his van, he was retired and spent all his time camping and trailriding in summer, lucky fella

He had a KLX250S and what a smashing bike that is, looked a great traillie

After lunch, from the bakers in Leyburn we did a few more familiar lanes, then went exploring to search out a new lane, which from the terrain has never been used by bikes although it is legally valid as a road

Narrow at first, with an abondoned farmstead in the middle and then opens out into open buttercup meadows, with even a disused railway bridge to go under

Marvellous stuff, always good to add another to the list, brilliant views of Wensleydale's castle

They can take them away, but always good to find another unused one

Last couple of the afternoon, time to head home - with just enough time to call in to Brymor for an ice cream in their parlour - cheers Fritz

I've got lanes almost on my back door, but by comparison, not that long. So my off roading is 2/3 tarmac ... 1/3 dirt.

It must be great to get on a by-way that's thirty miles long ...

As far as your eye can see...............off into the far horizon - I like this pic for its scale and depth - 1200ft up too

Another issue for me, is that I've obviously got to bear in mind that my byway is a two way street.

There are few and far opportunities to get a decent lick on (bugger the TRF's 20 mph limit ... ) because I'm constantly worried about another bike coming the other way, or a horse / dog walker..


Most of my lanes are this sort of affair;



All well and good, but I'm constantly thinking 'can I stop if I meet an oncoming bike .. '

Looks like you could get a decent lick on up there though ..

You can, but sunken & jagged rocks can catch you out in some places, plus drainage ditches etc.............but the TRF advisory speed can be exceeded with ease

It gets a bit sandy too in summer

A knarly little lane - it ain't all balls out (neither should it be, steady is good enough), you should be able to smell the garlic...but not the spreading in adjacent field
