Flip front helmets

As my recent 'accident' has rather ruined the appearance of my Shoei Z-One helmet, I need to buy a new bone dome.

I am interested in flip-front helmets, but have no idea which is best/worst.

I've looked at Schubert models, but cannot see much difference between the C2 and the Concept. Also had a good look at the BMW helmet (made by Schubert??).

There is the much less expensive Caberg.

And also a Schoei model.

So, do any of you guys (and guyesses) use a flip-front helmet? And what do you think of them?

Come to that, I had a musical hat on as well. I meant, of course, Scuberth, not Schubert, although both are pronounced the same in German.

I recently bought a HJC Sy-max and have been impressed with the quality and performance. Comfortable, fairly quiet and works well one handed.

Hiya Droopy,

I use a Vemar flip fronted helmet, I like it although a few years old it has given excellent service and I would definitely have another. The Vemar also works well one handed.

I've had a Caberg for a couple of years and find it pretty good - although there's not a lot of chin clearance (and I'm no Desperate Dan'). It also has an ACU 'gold' badge.

Just been 'given' a BMW flip front which is quieter, a bit more comfy, not quite as easy to open but generally better all round - mind you, at 3x the price of the Caberg you'd expect it to be.

Shoei Synchrotech 2 is a very good helmet.

Comes with pinloc visor insert now as well!

Very easy one handed operation.

Fairly quiet too!

I have had 3 flip fronts: BMW system2, £200 odd quid. i think, 1998 anyway. Very good lid... atouch heavy. Then i had a syncrotech, also a gud un...... i now av one of them cybergs... or how ever the hell its spelltt. this is ,for me anyway the best lid i have ever used. And all for £135.00.

Over the years I've used BMW System II, III and now IV. Until recently I always preferred my Shoei X8R.

What I find now is that I'm using the BMW IV much more. It's light, comfortable and fairly quiet for a flip-front. I did buy the peak and side pieces which means that I can use it with chin-bar and peak (with goggles), as a full-face or with peak and cheek pads as an open-face. Compared to the earlier versions the swap between the visor etc is very quick and needs no tools, just some courage to yank it!

Was filling up today and another motorcyclist reminded me of another benefit when he had to remove his lid, the staff were happy with the chin-bar up on mine. Despite putting in 29 litres to his 12, I was paid up and riding away while he was still on the forecourt.

Worst thing about the system IV (IMHO), is if you have the visor partly up, the lower portion of it really distorts the view if you try to look through it.

Ah the spelling comes back to haunt you...

Just my tuppence worth but "sChubert" is OK but not as good as most make out, they leak and fog and make loads of noise. Done 40000 in mine though as once I've paid the dosh I must have my monies worth...

I won't be buying another, though I'll miss the sun shades...

I can recommend the Schuberth

but only the Concept and only if you have a big head (larger than 64cm). And then the recommendation is more of a "not a lot of choice" option.

Comfortable, but noisy (earplugs all the time noisy) and it lets rain down the inside of the visor, particularly if you have to ride with it in "ventilation" mode (ie clicked forward 2mm away from the front of the helmet) because you wear glasses.

Reading back over this, I should stop riding motorcycles, shouldn't I, because my head is weird.

Has full 'pilot' style slide down dark visor that comes down behind the main clear visor [which is 'double glazed' and doesn't mist up]
Also comes with full pilot style mask for winter use if you want.
About £190 - got mine for £140 at Ally Pally show.

the all ways fogs up you have to apply anti fog spray every time you put it on and you cannot get a fog city to fit
due to the double curve of the viser
as for comfort its ok
so i am looking to get a new lid

Until recently I swapped between an Arai RX7 Corsair and BMW System IV. Mainly used the Arai on the little bike and the System IV for the GSA. Then got seduced by Arai Tour-X on a retail therapy day. Now all I seem to use is the Tour-X.

Don't miss the flip-lid at all even when touring...

Caberg Justissimo. Neat drop down dark visor, reasonably comfortable and less than £150.

Like others on this site, I have used BMW System helmets, from the golf ball model to the 4. I now use a Nolan N100. I prefer this helmet as when the chin bar is raised, it 'sits' on the forehead rather than acting like a sail on the BMW items - much kinder on my neck.

Another vote for the HJC Sy-Max. On to my second, now and for features/quietness/value for money, they can't be beaten. Good vents, detachable lining for cleaning, almost as quiet as my previous Shoei, good single-handed operation of the flip, best visor system I have come across, blah, blah blah. Try one - mine cost less than 90 quid at the BMF complete with Iridium visor!!

Hmmmmmm ....

So, 20 different people put forward 22 different ideas

I have now managed to bag a brand new System 4 helmet from the German eBay site for the princely sum of £135. Postage to be £10.

However, many thanks to all those who have given their opinions. It just goes to show that we're all different.
