Flip front lid....riding with it up.

The main problem I've found with the Evoline is getting the chin guard to latch properly if I decide to put it down(full face mode) while riding. Pushing the guard back with one hand pushes the helmet all over the place, making it uncomfy at best and, if you wear specs, causes them to sit in the wrong place. Not easy to sort out with one hand.

Other problem is that the weight of the guard when folded back over the lid causes headache pain on my forehead after about an hour or so of riding. The weight seems to pull the front of the helmet tighter at the front. No issues with turbulence behind my RT screen.

What version of the Evoline do you have? The later Evoline 3 is lighter and I have not had the issues you have had with mine.

Legal or Not

Fact.
It is absolutely "LEGAL" to ride with your flip top helmet lifted "UP", if you want to. As long as it is safety regulated and the chin strap is fastened. If you get stopped and told it is illegal, make the bobby show you in his book where it says it is illegal. He WONT be able to.
Not recommended to ride with one lifted up though :reaper :bobby.

A good friend of mine, Dave Death (his real name) was taken to court back in the early nineties for riding with his BMW helmet flipped up.
He was a despatch rider and a city of london motorbike police officer said it was illegal, he said it wasn't.. so a day in mansion house magistrates court was set.

The judge threw the case out within seconds and had stern words with the officer... the court case even made MCN at the time..

.....and 20 years later they would throw the book at him.....:(

INSECTS

Just a watch out, caught a sore one in italy a couple of years ago, start of the swelling just visible in this pic

I gave up and got an open face, with a chin guard. Schuberth J1.
Great visibility, quiet - yes- no draughts, went up to N Yorks in December, no problem.
Best bit is the numpties can see if you are smiling or snarling at them!

Evoline3 for me, only a few models are dual homologated so strictly legal open or closed.

Chose the Shark because the chin bar flips all the way back and does not create a massive sail on top of your head in open position

Agree with the difficulty in closing but easy with 2 hands, on the move or stationary.

Whilst the 3 is a bit lighter than previous, it's still a big helmet - but its not a bad nick name to have......

I ride with my flip up almost permanently, don't even give it a thought and i've never had any problems in more than 30 years since i bought a system 2 in 1983. ...

Half the problem is whether its comfortable with it up... I used to swear by full face lids and now only wear open faces... The main thing is to get one with a fullish visor to cover your face a la Steptoe's sting... When I was an instructor a hornet stung me on the cheek on the only uncovered bit of face... Shoei grv and Raybans... FFS it blew up like a balloon on the next day ride to the lakes...

If yer chin paranoid then only a full face will do but I'm not attgatt these days and can't be bothered with all that...

PS I remember the David Death case and remember part of his argument was that the Met etc were often seen "flipped up"...

For "Steptoe"... read "Pablo"...:)

Definitely a convert to open faced helmets.

I purchased a Schuberth J1 from this site, and never wore my neotec again.
Annoyingly I had it stolen earlier this year and have been looking for another.

I've now come to the conclusion that there are none available either new or S/H.

Waited for the J2 to be released, but that's not happening anytime soon.

Looking at the Arai CT-Ram but have been unable to find any locally to try on.

I'm now having to wear my Neotec again, and whilst it's a good helmet I'm rapidly growing to dislike it after having the J1.

Personally having worn all types of helmet and tried most makes, rider comfort has to be key as safety is paramount.

I choose to wear a full face but for practical reasons wear a Shoei Neotec when on duty for blood bikes and as a tutor. I usually set off with the helmet flipped up but lock it down once I'm under way.

I started of with a Nolan open face 34 years ago and cannot imagine going back to one unless I buy a Vespa

I currently use a helmet that was sold as a Moto Guzzi product, possibly made by Nolan. This is a flip front which stays upright and I often ride with this up ( up to about 60mph) not too sure if it has any legal certification. I also have an old Caberg flip front but the front does not go as far back as the Guzzi lid which makes it somewhat impractical for riding with it open. I have on the odd occasion used an open face lid on very hot days.
My quietest and most comfortable helmet is an old Arai Quantum, but that is a bit bashed and chipped, and only used for when I'm nipping round the block to test ride one of my bikes. My wife uses a Shoei flip front but the chin piece doesn't go over far enough for my liking.
I originally posted this topic as I'm looking to replace the old Caberg and Guzzi helmets with a new flip front that I can use with it opened. Thanks for all your comments.

Just treated myself to new Lazer Monaco pure-glass flip helmet for 2015 great buy, great bluetooth included , self tinting visor looks good, well pleased all for £189.

Flip up

I have seen plenty of UK police riding with the flip up, often with BMW or Schuberth helmets and usually in an urban environment.
