Flip Up Helmets

Hi All,

Would it be unreasonable of me to expect a flip-up helmet to be approaching as good as an 'adventure' style helmet when it comes to protecting the face from the wind?

I've just replaced my ancient Tour-X with a Ruby Belvedere flip up (2nd mortgage needed) and the amount of wind coming up the inside of the visor seems excessive in comparison. Indeed, riding into the wind my eyelids were moved. Is this normal for a flip up? I've found wearing a Buff reduces the problem but should I need to?

Aside from this the Ruby is great - light, quiet, comfortable and IMHO looks good. So it should be at the price but I was hoping for some more wind protection.

I'm on my second Shoei Multitec They both came with a chin curtain and consequently very little airflow travels up inside the helmet I wear a neck tube too which adds to the snugness or is that smugness

What model helmet is it? My idea of a flip is not an open face with a bubble visor So I may be talking apples whilst you are talking oranges?

Not in my experience.
I'm on my 3rd flip. 1 a Schuberth, 1 a BMW (a Schuberth by any other name) & my current Shoei Multitec.

They do vary & the Shoei is the worst of all 3 but I've not experienced what you're describing.

Ah you say that, but my quietest helmet is a open face with a screen, cold at this time of the year, but great in the hot weather!

It's really quiet with the design of the lining around the ear, just quite a lot of air seems to go up the front. I'm not an aerodynamicist but wouldn't expect so much additional (and unwanted) ventilation with that shape.

Good to hear other folks experiences with similar - whatever label you want to call the style of lid.

That is brilliant - I am still chuckling. These Ruby helmets do look good and are very light, the leather lining is superb. I have one in red. On a short trip/commute it is perfect but having done three weeks in it touring I am not so sure. The addition of a buff pulled up over the nose reduces the wind on the face - but the lack of a peak in low sunshine was a problem. I think it is a great helmet - and it is a work of art but am not sure if it is for long distance riding. Off road the visibility with the Visor up was great and it was nice to have the "space around the face" in hot climates. Maybe it is aimed at the scooter owners and the Keira Knightley's of this world? Style over substance?

Naughty, Ian's helmet (head version) is white. It doesn't look like that I can assure you!
