Flip up helmets

Needing a replacement helmet thought I would get one of these - but am finding it difficult to see the point to use only for commuting.

If you are not doing a lot of daily mileage is there some benefit to getting of these helmets - could users who have gone from fixed chin ones care to share

I do a lot of daily mileage and still cannot see the point of the helmets really. I had a Schuberth C2 for a month and didn't get on with it. The construction and padding appears to be of an open faced helmet.

I find a full face helmet much more comfortable, even with glasses etc. I'd never ride without the chinguard down, so they're no use to me. The extra weight & noise wasn't welcome either.

You could do what I did - buy a second hand one on ebay to 'test', then re-sell to buy a new one if you want. I ended up re-selling for a £150 profit

If you smoke, have allergies or go into often, I could see the point...

I use a flip front System 5 for commuting, or nipping to the shops. I can put it on without taking my specs off, I can have a fag without taking it off, I can have a chat without taking it off etc, etc.
Other than that it's crap. If I'm going out for a ride its contact lenses and an Arai.

i have a shuberth c2! love it.
had a caberg flip before
although as i now have u/s arms i could not pull a full face helmet on;

i've got use'd to the ease of a flip for many reasons,
ie- fuel stations,hotels,nipping into shops,low speed bimbling,ease at toll booths etc.and many more occasions.
beware they are not as quiet as full face lids,i have touerd for 5 years now with flip lids with no problems.

had several full face lids, all good.

Currently with a Caberg Trip £99- very impressed with the "keep the helmet on at the fuel station / peage / corner shop"

it clears faster than any full face I have used.

Looking for a lifty lid for my wife - her head shape does not get on with the shape of the 'trip', but for the extra we are looking at the £150 "Viper".
It is fully fitted functional bluetooth enabled helmet, with lifting front. Pillion and rider can communicate, with rider being able to hook into ipod and phone / GPS.

If you are after trying a cheap lifty - try LIDL. They had them in for £30, all CE markede and UK approved : )

Just bought another...

Having had Arai full face lids for years (on sportsbikes) I bought a flip-up Caberg J1 some years ago. I loved the ability to flip it up for a chat/fuelling etc. The problem with that one was that it misted quite badly.

Got a System 5 when I got my first Beemer and loved it - heavier than the Arai but quiet and seems well made compared to the Caberg (ought to be for over twice the price!)

The only problem was that it took quite a while to "bed in", resulting in some stops that saw me making like Monkey from the late 70's Japanese TV show of the same name (you may remember his punishment for misdemeanours!).

Just got a new System 5 (matt black - had to get it!) as the old one is now about 4 yrs old and had suffered a few falls off the saddle etc. This one seems more comfortable from the off (or my head has been BMWised!).

For pootling round town and touring I really love flip-ups. If I was going to a track day I would definitely be getting my Arai out. For off-roading I'd be wearing an off-road lid. Horses for courses, innit!

I wear glasses and it can be a hassle getting a full face lid on and off, having to remove glasses.. BUT having seen the facial injuries sustained by a guy who hit the tarmac just down the road from the Ponderosa hotel, with a Caberg flip front, it was either up before he hit or he hadn't got it lock down, but either way.. DONT.. imho..

I would rather live with the inconvenience of a full face, than risk the hinge..

ALSO something from our FBoS training course for medics.. its harder to remove a flip front and takes longer,, than a full face as its hard to flex the side shell or cut it if required due to the hinge positions. So if you do come a cropper and need assistance, flip front can slow you getting that assistance..

Its personal choice in the end, but its the reason I don't wear one and never will.

Ive replaced my Arai Tour-X with a Shoei Multitec. Very much quieter
and more comfortable. Pin lock anti mist thingy as fitted to the Shoei
is brilliant. It is the only anti fogging device, that Ive ever had, that works.
First class, quality bit o' kit.

I have replaced my shoei syncrotech with a schuberth j1. I love it! It dosent have the protection of a full face but with the bar in place its not far off. Its quieter than the shoei and visibility is great. The price is a major problem, I was lucky and got mine as new on ebay for half price. I get all hot and bothered in full face helmets, the shoei flip lid was great in comparison but the j1 is even better for me. I am a bit uncomfortable about the lowered level of protection in an off but i would rather take the risk than wear a full face. In the good old days I used to wear no helmet atall but even if the law was changed again i think i would still put one on now.
