Yep, in my opinion they do afford some protection and they also do look good.
I think Sgt Bilco`s views were somewhat unfair (for want of a better word) for the average rider to consider but to always give the benefit of doubt he is most possibly one of the hard core geezers who regularly chucks his machine down hills
and most likely really really knows what he is talking about so we are lucky to get an opinion posted from one of these guys
