Fork Seals

My nearside fork seal seems to have failed on my R1100GS, not bad I guess after 54,000miles.

I've heard it's a doddle to fix them myself but am not fully convinced.

I have booked into SLM in Caterham to have both replaced and they reckon the cost will be £180.00 plus VAT, as it is 3 hours labour and the parts are £40 ish.

Firstly, is it worth getting them both done at the same time or just the leakey one?

Secondly, is it really an easy job and are SLM just pulling my you know what??

Do I go for replacing both or just the failed one??

I know the forks on the GS do little damping as the main unit does all of that.

Talking of oil / damping / forks stuff......

Is there any benefit in 'installing' slightly heavier oil in the forks ?

is there any damping components to make use of the viscosity increase ?

am i talking bollox ?

Both fork seals now replaced in 1 hour (while I waited) by Slocombes Motorcycles in Neasden. Had a mug of teas and a bacon sarnie while it was being done, top job.

They are Honda dealers now but used to be a BMW dealer too, until they got hacked off with the way they were treated by them.
I bought an F650 from them years ago and have used them lots in the past, never a problem, just not local to me.
The mechanics have a wealth of BMW knowledege.

Total cost £74.92

Bit different to the £180 + VAT for 3 hours work quoted by South London Motorcycyles.
