Fork Stanchion recall?

Talking to the folks at a BMW dealer in California today, they say there have been a few failures in very extreme circumstances. One customer of theirs had a failure in the Baja but he was jumping his bike off sand dunes.

Sleep easy people, BMW are being over cautious as normal most of the Tesco warriors will be fine.

Some Tesco shops have speed bumps in their car parks

I wonder what Simon Pavey and the BMW off road school is thinking about all of this.

Does that mean their bikes are now fit for purpose or not?

I'm using their machines in Sept.

I wouldn't worry. Sure they'll be checking them all the time now. I bet they were first on the list for the repair....can you imagine the bad PR!

How many bikes have been involved in minor low speed bumps on the road (ones which on earlier gs or gsa models or convemtional bikes would have left them relatively unscathed), yet because of the defect the forks have parted writing off the bike.
Over the past 3 years there seem to have been more than a few salvage ones for sale where this has happened, will BMW be making good the financial loss to those who have had their bikes written off in that period

+1 mate.

There was a day when you bent your forks and sent them off to be straightened. The good old days.

Leaving the Bike shuttle place in Geneva yesterday , a guy from Hull pulled his 67 year old Vincent from the garage. Purring like a kitten on a tractor. I bet it'll still be working in another 67 years. Well done him. He did bring his own toolbox though

Oi, get off this thread and crack on with the ride report; we're all waiting for an update.:rob:D

Bodge it : yep , it's easy to understand, you sum it up well.
Too many BMW apologists here ! Astonishing allegiance to the vendor.

I wouldn't say any of the posts have been by BMW apologists, or by any allegiance to BMW. Instead, some people have been taking a common sense approach, showing concern for the problem, finding out about it, and carrying out there own checks until BMW invite them in for the official check/repair.

I could take the polar opposite view to yours and say "Too many BMW haters on here, always quick to react hysterically to any fault before it is investigated properly", but I'm sure this would be a totally incorrect representation of your view and attitude, just as your statement regarding those that are happy to carry out their own check and ride their bikes is.

Great post. Really helpful. Funny when the guy says 'this is our courtesy bike and he wants it right as he lends it out to people'. Better safe, unless you you're a real man. Anyone know how they get the chrome fork leg back in without damaging the fork seals?

Yes, BMW mechanics know. What a non contributive pointless question:rolleyes:

Just spoke with my BMW Dealer. Tooling has arrived, they're just waiting for delivery of the collars.

I'm on the list now to get it booked in ASAP.

Thank you Forum Members for being hot on this, good job.

Thanks for that.

Just back from alps where I wasted a couple of hours having new seals fitted, only for them both to leak after 50km. Then another wasted couple of hours going back for two more. They wouldn't show me the old ones or I wouldn't ask the question.

Presumably, a question is only pointless if you don't care about the answer?

My GS has 13k 14reg. Maybe if you get this fix done, for the cost of a couple of seals you might bend the dealers arm to fit new ones while.its apart. There, a contribution

And how many of those claiming riders like me are BMW apologists with astonishing allegiance to them have parked their bikes up until the fix is done? If they haven't, then I would suggest they are not really as worried as their petty comments suggest !

So the pressed in interference fit fork ends are failing and the fix is an interference pressed on collar on top of the first pressed on part that was not up to the job and hold it on

Well at least BMW have nailed their colours to the mast with this fix. Any failure as a result post fix would be pretty dire for the company. I for one wont be too worried.... mine is booked in for service and inspection next week in Manchester. Massive thread and great input by everyone, well, apart from the insulting bits with rude words.

When you look at how the chrome sections come out it rules out one of the issues I had - which was when jumping the bike over a small hump I've been wondering if, when the forks extend to the max, they've been essentially pulling the stanchions out bit by bit. But I don't think that's it at all after watching the video. So my guess is that any flexing under load is working them out instead and if that's the case then although the fix is push on, they will beef up the stanchions to help prevent them flexing in the first instance. I guess time will tell if it works won't it, but it should be fine with the fix.

What material is the pressed on collar made from?
