Fork Stanchion recall?

Just been reading the article in MCN about this and it occurs to me that the fix had better be 100% effective, because by covering the top of the stanchion it makes it impossible to check for any future movement. If the stanchion did still separate the first you would know about it would be when it popped out from under the sleeve applied as a fix, and the front wheel fell over. I think I'm going to be making a mark on my stanchion at the bottom of the new metal sleeve so that I can be sure it is not moving.

Make a mark. Do it. It's the only way to be sure

Having said that, I don't think it's going anywhere if the bush is a tight fit.

That's exactly what I said, so why quote me and say no? Perhaps try reading it again! :)

( I wrote in response to a post saying that a rubber bush was being replaced as well as the sleeve being fitted.)

OK, let's have another go. BMW are not replacing the rubbery bit at the top which allows the stanchions to move relative to the yoke. They are ensuring the flexible rubbery bit that's fixed to the ally plug in the stanchion doesn't cause the ally plug bit to start moving in the top of the stanchion. The new steel sleeve over the top of the stanchion stops the top of the stanchion deforming thereby releasing the top ally bit, which swivels on the rubbery bit attached to the top yoke.

Sounds about right to me :)

Sounds like a fucking bodge to me.I won't be letting the clowns anywhere near my forks until they come up with a more permanent solution.

"The Clowns" designed and built all of the Motorcycle. Don't let them finally getting this bit right sway your judgement. Design and build your own motorcycle to show them how it should be done: it's the only way they'll learn!

So, even thought the risk is extremely small, BMW engineer a fix for the stanchion and still some people aren't happy. I'm not sure anything they do will satisfy those who have convinced themselves their front end is about to fail.

Here's a glass of water. There's an 'extremely small risk' it has poison in it that may cause life changing or potentially life ending events. Go on, tell me you'd all drink it

The fix is good enough for me to order a new GSA in due course. I'm happy that, understanding the issue better, the fix is ok. I don't think it's perfect. I don't. And none of us will be surprised to see a complete redesign with the next model version. But is it likely to be good enough? Yes, I suspect so.

I agree that there is an issue that remains though. There needs to be a visual check of some sort to monitor (occasionally) whether the 'fix' is moving. Perhaps a go, not go gauge.

I would venture that the risks we all take simply taking to the roads, coupled with the additional risk of some people's own riding style and skill level, or lack of, are orders of magnitude greater than the risk of the forks having an issue.

The problem is if we designed our own MC for total safety it would be over engineered and weight 500kg

Indeed, I still use my GS almost every day to commute to work and have a trip to the Dales on the 30th July and a trip to the Picos at the end of August - I am not in the slightest bit worried because there is no logical reason to be worried.

I have just done a 1800 mile trip to the Lakes and Dales on my 15 plate GS LC and it didn't make me change my riding style at all. I pick up my new Exclusive on Saturday which will need the update but I know it hasn't been done and I will ride it as normal and wait until they get round to doing the update without any worries:rolleyes:

Absolutely. It would be rubbish too. Fortunately, there's a range of manufacturers to choose from making an almost overwhelming choice of bikes, many of them excellent. Whilst we can all be a bit disappointed with our choice now and again, it's our choice to make. If the GS wasn't my choice, I'm absolutely sure I'd not be wasting my time on here bashing it. If I'd lost all faith in BMW, I'd be riding/driving something else and again not wasting my time here slagging them off. Good to share our experiences and our knowledge, good to compare levels of service, good to identify common issues. Moaning has a place too and it's good to get things of our chest, and this stuff shouldn't be buried, but continual spleen venting about the GS in particular and BMW in general? Why don't they just vote with their feet/wallet and leave us happy/deluded souls to generally enjoy our BMWs and particularly our GSs?

2018 forks

Will the new 2018 models due out soon have a new front fork or have the fork mods done before leaving factory.
