This is a new one on me, oil leaking from between the forks. Started during my first lap of the Nurburgring!! Can the forks be taken apart at this point or is it best to get another set!

Cheers

Is it definitely the forks and not those rubber brake hoses breaching under pressure and squirting a jet of fluid at the fork? Looks more likely, no?

I'm guessing you will have been taking things right as far your trousers could manage around that circuit , so the brakes and hoses will have had a proper work out...

Hi No brand new fork oil leaking out, you can actually see it seep out when you put the brakes on and push forward, can even feel the movement. Did mean the wet wipes where needed on the ring!! To clean the tyre.

If it is, indeed, fork oil (sounds to me like it is), I'd start with replacing the fork seals. It's a rather simple job. Unless the forked themselves are somehow damaged, you shouldn't need a whole new set.

Steptoe posted a how-to somewhere, might be in the stickies.

I don't know how the leg if fitted into the fork end. I am sure someone on here knows, but I would have thought they were screwed together?

Is they're any play between the two parts that you can feel?

It had new seals, the leak is from that joint on both sides. I know on some bikes that its screwed together but on the gs i am not sure.

You can feel the freeplay, i thought it was the bushes on the triple clamps but they are new. You can see the fluid move between the joint, makes for interesting riding!

I'm unsure if the fork leg screws into the bottom, but if you remove the spindle and pinch bolts, check if bolt #8 is loose and if it has an influence.

Bolt 8 hold is only a drain (I think)

What bike and year?

On the 11xx GS's, the fork uppers and lowers are not connected in any way. They're simply slid together. The lowers are connected to the lower tree which in turn is connected to the telelever. The uppers simply make a connection to the lowers so you can steer.

edit to add: If you feel lateral movement in the joint, something is not quite right. It may not be the forked themselves, though. Are all the triple tree bolts (top and bottom) done up correctly?

And yes, part #8 is simply a drain.

Looking at the forks the lower alloy clamp section which carries the calipers and through which the axle fits will be fixed to the fork leg in a similar way to the how the lower alloy sections fit onto the steel fork stanchions on a set of upside down forks.

They are usually screwed and fixed with a threadlock compound and often a grub screw as well.

All in all it appears that the joint is beginning to separate by whatever means , unless there is a specialist who can do the work and guarantee I would be looking at secondhand fork lowers

I think someone else is multi tasking. I'm glad it's not just me. It's been a busy day

I'm surprised its done this. I would have imagined they'd have been put together in an almost permanent way? I share Matt's thinking, unless someone can tell you they're repairable, it's not really something you want to be worrying about! Especially if you're going back to the ring

The gs is a 1999 1150, I have come across the screw fitting on other bikes, I think these may be simply a push fit that has decided after 160K to give up.

Jesus there's some shite posted in this thread by people simply guessing without even knowing what the actual problem is....

This problem isn't as uncommon as you think and has been posted about previously ...

Easiest and cheapest remedy is a used fork slider. :thumb2

But surely that's half the fun of this forum? :D

How are they fixed together? Put us out of our misery :D

After another days riding, and watching the joint flex (EEKK!) I think that these are heated and allowed to contract to get the fit. Unless someone knows better.
