Forks, corrosion

Regardless that bike has clearly been neglected - it is unequivocal.

I agree that BMW need to improve the quality of the paintwork and have told them so in every survey and every bit of feedback they have requested BUT no one with even an ounce of nous can let a bike get to that state before they do something about it.

I will not be buying another. It may be the best selling bike at the moment but people will think twice.

People have been saying that for the 12 years or so that I have been on this site but it doesn't seem to have affected the sales one bit.

I did. Week 3 I went to the dealer and said, hey, these crash bars are rusting....
third month the frame was showing rust at the welds, I went to the dealer again. They said they would contact someone.
Month 6, I starting contacting people on my own, bike was getting worse by a lot.
Finally at month 10 they inspected my bike, the guy said holy crap... He had not seen anything that bad since he saw a new one come off the trans-alaskian highway.
Here we are in month 11. The bike looks like a 1983 datsun. They called me friday to setup a conference call. I am sure they are going to try to insult me with something stupid like "we can replace the crash bars free" but we will see. I told them during the inspection I would like the bike swapped out for a new one. He said we are far apart on that.
You can say neglect all you want. washing every 3-4 weeks should be enough for any off road bike, that is driven on road only.

I wash my off road bike after every ride but I wash it myself and am very careful were I spray the water and what I wash it with

I am not sure how many hours people in the UK work a week, but here I work 48+5 hours commute time each week.
On top of that I have a 50' sailing yacht that I maintain, A Cessna 172, 2 motorcycles, a shooting hobby, 1 scooter, a jeep wrangler, a wife, a baby, a full diving kit, a photography hobby, I am building a duplex by hand, and I travel international for fun. That does not leave much time for polishing the BMW after my daily commute. I thought once every 3 weeks was a great compromise.
The forks rusted, as did the rest of the bike, in only a few months. My old BMW f650GS that was in worse conditions (winter road salt) did not start showing frame rust until year 4. So if you are saying they changed nothing since 2011, I would say you are incorrect, as I have owned a newer and older bike, and only the new one rusted out. As to you time demands sir, I think you are way off base calling me a neglector. An outdoor product should not have to be spit shined every 5 minuets of ride time.

I absolutely agree with you, your bike is a F**king mess! and yes BMW should do something about it. But there's clearly more to it for a bike of that age to rust/corrode to that extent, no matter how little you have cleaned it.

I certainly don't believe it's just down to poor build quality or thin paint, wrong paint, or any of the other crap that's often spoken about theses bikes.

Good luck with your forthcoming battle with BMW, I genuinely hope you get a satisfactory outcome.

Looks a bit like the finish has been compromised and the corrosion has found a way in. Maybe when they are being crimped they have gripped the forks with somthing.
In any case, I think its a fault and hope you get some recompense.
Be interesting to see how you get
On.

They don't really get much choice.
The following items are warranted
for defects in material and
workmanship only for the first
12 months:
• Paint and powder coat finishes

The Palm House at Kew lasted almost 150 years before due to corrosion had to be renovated, you talk absolute bullocks sometimes. No AFC or special paints used back in 1840:rolleyes:

If you maintain your yacht and Cessna like you do your bike, go into a quiet room now and slap yourself.

:)

Talk about crap comparison- you talk absolute bullocks sometimes :)

Maybe something was lost in translation?

Maybe WC is not for 'Water Cooled' --- maybe it's 'Will Corrode'

LOL Your not allowed unless special circumstances permit to maintain your own plane.
As for the yacht, I work on it daily.

LOL

Get the bloke who cleans your plane to look after any new bike you may buy - it's a win-win, the bike will be pristine and you will have loads of time for the wife, kids, photography etc :)
