Former Airhead owners - why did you sell ?

This has got to be the most miserable, depressing thread I've ever read on this site. I'm glad you miserable s*ds have sold your airheads. Now if you have quite finished the doors over the there so you can feck off and leave those of us who actually ride them to enjoy our bikes in peace.

One more unhappy comment and I'll delete the thread :mod

the OP asked why we'd sold. we answered.

if mine was the perfect bike, i'd still have it :nenau

I can find far more reasons to keep mine than to sell it and buy another type/make of bike. If I compare it to the more modern GS for example the finish is far better, the quality/thickness of the materials used seem way superior. Apart from my first nightmare GS that had been maintained by a chimp, all of my airheads have been entertaining and reliable. No computers involved in riding of maintaining them (ABS on a bike for fecks sake!!!!!). I have no desire to look like Ewan or Charlie. I will admit to trying the 1150 and sitting on a 1200 but was not seriously tempted. The 1200 has creaky bodywork (?)similar in strength to prawn crackers, the finish on the 1150 that at the time was only a few years old was spectacularly bad with pitted alloy components and flaky paint that would make a winter ridden yamaha diversion look good.
Ok so not fast or flash, but I couldn't give a Sh&t. Character & comfort in buckets. Easy to fix when they do go wrong, and I've yet to be stranded on the roadside by one. This is my 38th bike so I've sampled a few. I also own a 13 year old BMW 320 so I guess I'm a relic from a previous age!

If (or more likely when) I get one, it won't be because I'm expecting modern bike performance or handling, it'll be precisely because it isn't a modern bike.

Nothing I've read here puts me off :thumb

Exactily.

I have had many, many old twins, only one left today a R80G/s from 1980 build. Do I ride it much now, no. Will I get rid of it, probably. Why will I get rid of it, well as many have said it just does not cut the mustard in any way. I still love the old bikes but I find myself having more and more reality checks.

Yes, you can make them go a little better, make them handle a little better but then they are not the same bike any more. In any case the end result, as others have said, is hardly worth the effort and certainly not the money.

I built a couple of full-on Desert Raid bikes back in the late '80s, one of which had many works parts and a frame that actually did the Paris Dakar. It was fun back then but it is 20 years on now and my enthusiasm has waned somewhat.

I have spoken to Avro this morning :)
He has changed his mind, The 80g/s is not going in the immediate future
He thanks you for the numerous pm's but just forget about it :comfort

Besides I WAS first in the queue :rob:augie:drool

and I hold grudges :green gri

Ahhhh "little gringo" the bike that broke down least expected and ran when expected :D

Sold it for a more mature 1100 which cost me more money than I paid for it in the end piece of shite :eek The gentleman who bought it from me aptly renamed it to "big dingo" after identifying several things that was not perfect on the old 100GS. I actually offered him his money back after several emails where he gave me updates etc but in the end I think he got it sorted :nenau

Knowing what I do now would of kept it and never sold it ever. Great bikes and they have so much charachter. Got one in South-Africa that I use on holidays and when we get a chance to do trips out there

Awesome bike and love it to bits and dare I say sometimes more than my HP2

Did an awesome trip through Namibia last year with the airhead and was not always ideal but great overall. Read more here Maverick in Namibia 2007 - IDMFVISS

and a more recent short trip that just shows why an airhead is the way to go

As far as the original GS concept goes, what has really improved in the last 20 years. The oilheads are definately faster on the road but are much too heavy to be any use off road. Airhead road performance is alright but if you want a fast road bike you don't buy a Boxer now, as you wouldn't have 20 years ago. Reliability is no better (from what I hear from 1200 owners). Roadside repairs and home servicing are not really viable so cost of ownership goes up.

Fair enough most people like to change their bike every couple of years as manufacturers tempt us with their latest offerings, and then we all try hard to justify our choices, even though, more often than not, it's probably worse than the last one. I've tried it myself and after a few reality checks found the old airhead to be the best bike for me and they don't deserve the slating they get in here.

Interested to hear about any real improvements made over the last twenty years - not just that it goes faster as I'm sure that there must be two dozen bikes from 20 years ago that would still out do a 1200 GS on pretty much any road
