Former Airhead owners - why did you sell ?

Won't be buying another one then? :augie

Exactly Ive a well sorted 1100 in the garage annd its feckin marvelous,( scared to try anything more modern),When I can I take whatever bike fits the situation ,BMW GS 1100 do anything ,carry anything, doesnt feck up ,future classic.R80 G/S ,different ,cool ,not as tempremental as most other 20 year old bikes cause most of them are now reincarnated into Datsuns, and will still be on this planet long after polar bears and Tigers and 1200,s .Plus its a lovely bike to feck around on,and you can feck around with it break it and it costs 2 bob from Motorworks to fix it.

sold my PD after i bought a big white thing with 1200 written down the side and the airhead got left in the garage all the time.

before that, i used to ride it quite a lot but then i only had an 1150 as an alternative.

Sold my Bumble Bee back in around '93 because I wasn't using it much. It was almost quicker to cycle from Bromley to the East End than try to squeeze the 100GS through the Blackwall Tunnel southern approach. It was deteriorating quicker than a Ford Cortina too but perhaps I just didn't give it enough TLC.

Thats why I dont take the salesmans offer of a test ride:drool

Sold my first Bumble Bee coz it was a dog. It was probably the worst BMW M/c I've ever come across. If it could happen it would. It even made my Laverda Jota look robust. I went to look at an R80, rode it and although v slow I was bismitten. Had it 4 years but I had to sell it when I moved here 3 years ago. Looked around and found my current GS here as they seemed cheaper than uk, more of them for sale and left hand drive.
Never say never but I'm not looking to sell for a long time. In total I have owned 35 bikes, tried a Dakar and an F650 recently but I can't find anything that "fits" me better.

I take it thats a desperate attempt at keeping some value in your 1200 GSA. Unfortunately the sheer volume of disgruntled ex 1200 GSA owners is putting paid to that :D

i'd only care if i was selling it.

i sold the airhead :D

Although my experience with gs's is fairly recent, I have been on various beemers since 1978 when I passed my police advanced course. I bought a very nice 100RT and loved it. sold it for a nice K100 RT in motoquip colours. eventually sold it cos I was going to give up bikes but bought a crashed 80RT. enjoyed the rebuild . Fancied a change and got an immaculate K1 touring. Fantastic bike but I saw my licence disappearing so I bought a 1100RT. loved it and thought I would never sell it then we moved to Cornwall. Did'nt fancy touching the not so soft Cornish hedges so sold it for my first GS. A 92 PD. Absolutely brill except for the brakes which when following my mate on his Prilla factory, was not good. I reluctently sold it for a 1100 gs and I have to admit that it was a real do anything bike. Decided I would like an 1150 but could not reconsile the idea that was going to give my hard earned for essentially the same bike so I opted for a 1200 RS. Probably the most comfortable tourer Ive ever ridden but the thought of my licence again made me look around As we were planning an off road trip to Spain I bought Bertha my modified 100GS. I also got a 650 Dakar which is an unbelievably good all rounder. I swapped it with Flipfly, my youngest to stop him from modifying and spoiling a very original g/s. So thats where I am now.
Would I change again.... Not the g/s. Its a classic bike I can use seriously.
Bertha.. I have thought I might change to a 100RS, mainly cos ive never had one but I do love the quirkyness and the abilitry to mend it even with my limited mechanical knowledge. In fact I went to the bike show last week and have to say there was absolutely nothing even on the BM stand that I lusted after, Sad innit, I'll be joining Proff in the smelly wee bin soon:thumb

sold my airheads for various reasons but including unreliable, uncomfortable, old and not handleing. (i love em though ive had a dozen or so) most recently i had a PD 100 para and sold it for 1100 oilhead with is better in nearly all deparments except for nostalga!!:augie. now have a 1200 which is great and 301 mz for aircooled simple biking kicks (smells great):D

ps I will buy another at some point im sure

I'd ridden a few at work before I bought one.

My first one was new in early 1989, a 100GS in black. At that time I had an '88 K100RT, the GS was a second bike.

(Look away Keith).

I bought it mainly for the Para-lever. I ordered it on the basis of the write-ups, all very complimentary and before the local dealership had even seen one.

Compared to the K, it still felt as though the wheels were connected with a rubber rose-joint somewhere in the frame. I kept it about a year and sold it.

A while later I sold the K-RT and bought another black 100GS of about the same vintage as my first one from Newport. It had a few more extras than my first one and I kept it for years, did loads of miles on it but got fed-up with wringing its neck all the time, something that really didn't suit it.

I p-ex'd it at V&J for a red K1, set off around Spain on the K1 for three weeks and I have to admit, on seeing lots of great trails in Extramadura wished sometimes I'd kept the GS.

I always wanted a PD but they wouldn't import them because of the plastic tank.

I may have kept a PD and when I bought my current 1150GSA, I toyed with the idea of buying a good PD instead.

In retrospect, I'm glad that I didn't.

I still love the Two-Valve Boxers. I'm lucky that my mate re-acquired his old 80/7 and I got to restore it, thereby enjoying the simplicity of the design (I still do the 'fettling' of the 80/7 but I don't rule out the possibility of getting one myself one day as a project).

I wouldn't own one as an only bike at the moment simply because I don't think they're as good as the 11XX's for what I want from my main bike.

I have had many, many old twins, only one left today a R80G/s from 1980 build. Do I ride it much now, no. Will I get rid of it, probably. Why will I get rid of it, well as many have said it just does not cut the mustard in any way. I still love the old bikes but I find myself having more and more reality checks.

Yes, you can make them go a little better, make them handle a little better but then they are not the same bike any more. In any case the end result, as others have said, is hardly worth the effort and certainly not the money.

I built a couple of full-on Desert Raid bikes back in the late '80s, one of which had many works parts and a frame that actually did the Paris Dakar. It was fun back then but it is 20 years on now and my enthusiasm has waned somewhat.

why did you sell your beloved bike?

There was nothing beloved about my 1981 ex-Police R100RT. The fairing was wobbly, the dreaded previous owner had rounded off every nut, bolt and screw he could find and the loom was a disaster.

I bought it cheap (but not cheap enough) and once I had it working thoroughly enjoyed muscling it around (see this story for a write up of some of that) however as soon as I needed to do some mechanical work, it became an instant nightmare at every turn. Oh and it was thirsty at best.

Turned me on to Boxers though & earlier this year I was well happy to buy a GS :thumb2

This has got to be the most miserable, depressing thread I've ever read on this site. I'm glad you miserable s*ds have sold your airheads. Now if you have quite finished the doors over the there so you can feck off and leave those of us who actually ride them to enjoy our bikes in peace.

One more unhappy comment and I'll delete the thread :mod
